Welcome to Reverse Psychology, the Fraser Rewatch podcast where we go backwards through every episode of the show. Tonight, we are covering Season 9, Episode 23, The Guilt Trippers, which originally aired on May 14th, 2002. Is this it? Are we already going to see the time they slept together? We're gonna find out. I'm your host, Curtis Shuck. Joining me as always, it's our resident Upside Downer, it's Ryan Zin's own, Curtis. We got a birthday party tonight. Are you ready? I'm stoked. I am wearing an awkward cone-shaped hat. I'm so excited. Also with us today, our robot dog, it's Bradley Kirkston. What up, what up, what up? I'm gonna say a quote that really describes me by my personal poet, Edgar Allen Poe. I know Edgar and that wasn't Edgar. It's like something, it's wearing a hair, like a suit. Hmm. Edgar suit. I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity. Okay. Thank you. It doesn't sound right. When were you sane for long intervals? It hasn't happened yet, but I just became insane, so we'll wait for the long intervals. No. Isn't that the opposite of what that quote's saying? Well, I haven't become insane yet, I guess. I'm still sane. I'll become insane, I guess. You've convinced me. Oh, thank you. I'm a nut. Thank you. I don't think it's because of what Poe was dealing with. I think you just maybe were born that way, but you know. Hey, I was born that way. I'm just trying to figure out if that was supposed to be some kind of a breakfast pun. Who's Edgar Allen Poe? I'm sure in post you can make me sound good like you always do. I feel like there's a pun with Allen and Poe, but I can't find it. Well, when you get there, let me know. I'll call you. I don't know if you're Allen, but I'm thinking poached for Poe. I had Poe boy, Edgar Allen poached. Okay, that's not bad.

Game / activity
Curtis leads two gift challenges for Daphne: the greatest gift, then the worst. Ryan, Brad and Curtis explain and revise their proposals before the group discusses a choice. A $1,000 budget is introduced during the first round. The source does not clearly establish whether that is a ceiling or target. No numerical points are assigned.
Within the recorded rounds · 6 recorded contributions
Three proposals develop through questions and revisions. The voting rule is “No voting for yourself.” Brad votes for Ryan’s beer-of-the-month idea. Ryan criticizes Curtis’s secret room and tells Brad he also wins. Ryan is the round’s winner; his additional recognition of Brad is part of the exchange.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan favors consumable gifts and chooses an Around the World Beer of the Month Club: a box delivered to the door, rather than travel. Cheese, chocolate, meal kits and drinks advent calendars are alternatives discussed before he settles on beer for Daphne.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad begins with an apartment or condo. After questions about unlimited money and an introduced $1,000 budget, he changes to a fancy tea set. Curtis suggests getting a nice antique one.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis moves from a new fiancé through a food-gift-card idea to a bookshelf attached to Daphne’s existing door. Pulling books in a particular sequence would open it. The others challenge the installation, privacy and practicality.
Ryan, Brad and Curtis propose burdensome or unwanted gifts. The group explicitly selects Brad’s unsolicited pet as the worst gift. Brad first names a dog; Ryan proposes a bird “that never gets referenced again,” and Brad accepts that change.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan argues that permanent entertainment chosen without asking creates an obligation to keep and consume it. After discussing donations and unwanted presents, his specific answer is “13 seasons of X-Files,” preserved as spoken.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad proposes a pet without being asked. An unwanted gym membership is also discussed, but he selects the animal. Brad names a dog, then Ryan proposes a bird “that never gets referenced again.” Brad accepts the bird; the gift remains his proposal.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis chooses a Tamagotchi, describing it as a poor fad toy.

Do not make it sound like it's a good thing, okay? I had joy duty. I didn't even know that was still a thing. No one made that. He didn't make it sound good. He just said you have a day. Let me reset. Let me redo the intro. Thank you. All right. Brad, I hear you've got an exciting, wonderful day tomorrow. What are you going to be doing? This disrespect, this way to just make me feel sad. Tomorrow is not a good day. Tomorrow is apparently still in today's economy. You're doing fake mad, Brad. Just tell us what you're doing tomorrow. Yeah, just talk to us. No, I have this thing called jury duty. Did you know that's still a thing? Like, this is ridiculous that I have to go. You're still performing. You do this weird whisper voice when you're pretend mad. It's like, I'm like so mad. I just don't understand why I'd have to go into a room. First off, that's not what jury duty is. You don't just go into a room. Just stop doing the voice. Just do your regular, just talk. No, I don't know what you're talking about. I'm so annoyed about jury duty. I'm not happy about it. I don't want to do it. Who wants to go to jury duty? I have been longing to do jury duty. I've always wanted to do jury duty. I've never done it. I don't know what it's like. It seems like it would be kind of fun. And I saw that show jury duty. Like you might want a prize. So what is your opposition? I don't want to have to go in and dress all nice and sit in a room and wait to get my number called. I'm sorry. Who said you have to dress nice? You have to dress nice in our state. It's one of the most annoying things. Oh my God. I'm so excited. You don't know how to dress nice. What's in the letter that said you have to dress nice? By law. It says, man, have to wear khakis buttoned down and a tie. So that's fun. Gasp. Yeah. Is tie your problem? Because you generally dress like that. No, not anymore. Not, not, not have a dress like that in years and years and years. Now it's just like t-shirt and shorts at work. I'm so excited. And please, please send us your photo for jury duty. Oh my God. Am I allowed to live stream it? Can you live stream jury duty? That is a question for the bailiff, I think. Obviously till you get into the building and then they will immediately make you turn your phone off. No, I was surprised. You are allowed to bring your phone and laptop in. I was actually pleasantly surprised about that. You're allowed to bring your laptop in and do work while you're waiting. Yeah, I was actually surprised. Are you going to do work while you're waiting? Yeah. You work in a summer camp. What are you going to do with a laptop? Do you guys get paid in your state if you get jury duty? I didn't show up to jury duty when I was summoned. Is there a warrant out for you? Thankfully we were not selected. And if you don't show up to jury duty and aren't selected, it's fine. If you are selected, you're arrested. That does not sound like a good idea, Ryan. I did not expect that. I was like 21. Like I didn't understand anything. Nor do you still now. Yeah, I would say you could be 31. You still wouldn't have known anything. Nope. When I didn't know how to check it, so I called him. I was like, oh, hey, sorry, I missed it. Oh, God, Ryan. Instead of being mad, they're like, you're fine. You weren't called. So my one experience with jury duty, when we were in college, I got summoned for jury duty while we were at school. And I was like, I have classes to go to. And this was in my hometown, which seemed further than it was at the time. You're like 12 minutes from home. Oh, yeah. It used to go home all the time. I thought I went away to college. I was down the street. But yeah, so I called them and explained that because I was in the middle of a semester, I was not going to be able to do jury duty. Is there any way to postpone it? And I think that first they're like, we'll just cancel it. And I was like, no, no, no. I actually want to do this. Like, I mean, I was trying to explain to them, like, I'm genuinely interested in serving on a jury. I want to have that experience at least once in my life. And people complained about it. Maybe it does suck, but I've never done it. So I just want to try it. The only positive that I get is I will get paid $30 for going. Oh, OK. Well, that's good money. Do you get lunch, too? Or is it just $30? You got to buy your lunch while you're there? No, it does say you can bring a lunch or there's vending machines that take $1 bills. That's fucked. That's fucked. That's terrible. It made it very clear it only takes $1 bills. Ugh. That's horrible. A nice vending machine is only going to take $5. They've yet to figure out how to process a $10 bill. And nice vending machines take credit cards now. So I'm not really sure what that comment was. Do they? Yes. When was the last time you used a vending machine of any kind? When was the last time you did? Because if you didn't know, they take credit cards now. I think the last time I used a vending machine, I put in quarters and it took an hour. I'm pretty confident even in college we had vending machines that took credit cards. I don't think it's that new of an invention. Why would I use a vending machine? I'm just saying. We had restaurants that were 24 hours. They were 22 hours a day. Like, I didn't need a vending machine. I'm not saying it's rocket science to have a vending machine with a credit card reader. They're probably just like, only people that are going to use this carry cash. It's fine. So in my case, I was bummed because they rescheduled it for Christmas break, which is fine. Except for the lady was like, yeah, they're probably not going to call you because it's Christmas. It's like the week of Christmas. I did not get called, so I didn't have to go. The two other times I've had jury duty, I've called the night before and they said there's no cases. This time they called my number. I feel like I'm a draft, like I'm going to the military. They don't do jury duty on demand. They do it in case there's demand? Yeah. Wait, Ryan, you think they bring people in and sit them down in a jury for an empty room where no trial is happening? No, that's what I thought Brad was describing. I'm saying I thought that they called for jury duty when they needed it, when they had a case coming. No, because I got this like three months before and the government is not that efficient. That's the part I'm confused about. I think, I don't know anything about this process, but I'm going to talk as if I do. I think what they do is they just automatically summon a certain number of people every three months. That's what I'm hearing. Because they're anticipating the need. And then like in your case, Ryan, they may not need everybody. So you may not get called in the end, but they want you on deck in case they need you. My guess is, Ryan, what happened with you is you were supposed to call the night before and you had a number and your number probably wasn't called, but you didn't do anything. So you could have got arrested. I called three weeks later. Yeah, that sounds about right. I kept putting it off too. I could have been like, I should really call the courts. That would have been amazing if you were just sitting in a delivery room and then a state trooper came and arrested you for not going to jury duty. I'd be like, why, what? What are you talking about? Is it because I'm banked? He's like, no, it's because you didn't show up to jury duty. He's like, oh, okay. Your father would have been so bad too. Your dad's the lawyer. Yes, your dad would have been so bad. Does your dad know about any of this? No, I forgot it happened. It was such a blip. It obviously was a non-impactful moment in my life. Well, should we talk about a non-impactful moment in Frasier's life? Do that again. Well, we've all been summoned here today to talk about this episode of Frasier. Should we get to it? Yes. Eric, that's exactly what I'm talking about. We open with a helicopter rising over Seattle. At Daphne's birthday, Gert is miserable and complaining about her absent husband. Roz swings by to complain about being dumped by Roger. When you did the reading, I thought you said Curt is miserable. I thought he did too. For safety, Gert. Gert. Gertrude. Not Curt. Is your name Gertrude or Curtis? What's your full name? Well, I'm looking at a water bottle I've got sitting next to me with a name tag on it, and the name is Gretta, so you do the math. Oh, okay. All right. Curt is miserable, but we're at her birthday. Obviously, it's interesting, right? Because we lead into them talking about the dad. Like, there's dad issues at the start of the episode, which is kind of confusing. We very quickly establish it's Daphne's birthday. We very quickly establish the dad won't be here, and we know where that's going. We know where that's going to move to. It feels like that's some hangover from whatever happened last episode. It's impossible to say for sure that that's what happened. It was a really weird note to start on. It is clearly, like, a runner that's been happening. We've seen the conclusion of it, even though it seems like there should have been repercussions longer. I think that this is a story in motion. Yeah, it was weird to see Gertrude so, like, somber and sad without being that funny, especially in the beginning. She was just kind of sad. I think they're trying to go for it's funny because she's so, like, annoying or, like, ruining the vibe of what's supposed to be a joyful occasion. But you're right. It's not really fun or pleasant to be around. First of all, does she look different from this episode to next? We see her, and I think she's got, like, a different haircut or something. And then she's got that same haircut for all of next season that we see in the next episode. And then, like, that kind of made me look at everyone else. Listen, this episode felt like it was, like, 10 years before the last episode we just watched. I did not notice any of that. Yeah, I didn't notice any of that. They all look the same to me. Okay. Is this what it's like to have a wife? You just really have to notice women's hair? I, yeah, it's just going to always be on it, just in case, you know? I am blind, so don't use my opinion. Yeah, I don't know if I just wasn't paying attention last episode or what, but it's just something felt very different. And it started with me seeing her. And it looked old as hell. Again, this is like we had just watched the Frasier, the new Frasier finale, right? And so, like, maybe that's all it was, was just the time span from watching those two episodes. But I don't know. This felt like we were in the 90s at least. And we're not quite there yet. No, yeah, we're still in 2002. Worst gift ever. Journal? Yeah, journal. Terrible gift. Lingerie, like, not a terrible gift for Niles, I guess, but I don't think it's that great for Daphne. It felt real intense. It's awkward how she gives it, like how Roz gives it, because it's all about how her Roger broke up. Like, so it's just awkward how he, and then she clearly makes a joke that that was really for her. I don't know, do you give sexy lingerie to friends? Is that, have I led you guys astray by not dishing those out? Yeah, and I've been busy about it for a decade. Yeah, I mean, our other friend Vitaly has definitely given out sexy lingerie to his male friends. But that's just Vitaly. He does the thing every year at New Year's where he just mails you some MeUnties. They are always used, but it's fine. He washes them. I mean, it's not that bad. If you gave me a pair of underwear, period, I'd be like, what the fuck are you doing? If you're like, this will be fun for you in the bedroom, I'd be like, why are you, this is my dad's here. What are you doing? It's Roz. So I feel like Roz can get away with it a lot more than you could get away with it. The closest I've ever gotten to friend giving me underwear is actually you, Ryan, in college, in the dorms. I don't know what you're about to say. I don't have a fucking clue what you're about to say. Take a beat. It's okay. I don't think I bought underwear for myself in college. So this is about to be a real reveal. This is not technically underwear, but there was a day where I got, and this happened to all of us at some point, but I got locked out of my dorm room while showering. And so I had nothing but a towel and I had to wait like an extra half hour for like the office to open to go get a replacement key. Did they set that system up on purpose so that idiots could get locked out of their door? Because it happened to all of us. It happened so much. Oh, so bad. It was so bad. We're like dumb, but still. And we had to leave the building to go to a different building to get a replacement key. It was a terrible system. Yes. But I just remember hanging out in your room because you were around and I couldn't get into my room. And at one point you were just like, do you want like some shorts to put on? Like you don't have to just hang out in my room in a towel. So you gave me some gym shorts. That makes a lot more sense than Ryan giving you underwear. He was doing stretches and he was just like, ah, I just have to get limber. I'm like, Curt, put on some clothes, buddy. I don't care that we can't get into your room. I needed to get limber. What do you want from me? That's what I always do after showers. My post shower limber workout. So we get a scene where Niles and Daphne go off to the kitchen and talk about the mom. And I just can't get over what a complete and utter jerk Niles is. Like they're setting this up as a big romantic grand gesture he's going to do. But in this scene, he's just like so mean about it. Why do you assume he's in the wrong? We don't know what has happened yet. The primary problem is this mom is annoying. I'm annoyed about it. She's annoying. We know what she's like from here on out and she sucks. It's reasonable to assume she was worse before this. I'm not saying she's not horrible. I'm saying that whatever amount of annoyed by this woman he is, it probably pales in comparison to Daphne who's dealing with it as well as Daphne's mom who we don't know the context of what happened yet, but it seems pretty clear she is genuinely hurt. Like she's suffering in some way. The only thing that's uncouth is that he's going to town on... He's... Let me rephrase that. He is going off on her mom on her birthday. I think you got to give extra leniency there. But other than that, it's... What we've seen of Gertrude, he's probably dead on. I think the other thing that's adding to this, like him being shitty about her is fine. Like I don't mind that so much. Daphne's always kind of salty about her mom. It's really more that Daphne's trying to be like, hey, we need to really be there for her. We need to like... And he's like just rolling his eyes at her. Like that's... She's probably done something insane, like really recently because we know her. Okay. We'll find out. I want to give you another mistranslation. I'm still talking into my phone to take my notes. He said, I yearn for the days of difficult. And it translated to, I urine for the days of difficult. Well, you know, we all been there. Yeah. Felt relatable, right? Again, college. Yeah. Well, we cut back to the living room. We get a... Just one of my favorite moments of this episode, which is Gert talking to Roz about how to make somebody bleed internally. And if you do it right, he'll bleed from the inside and no one will know it was you. Yeah. Not just bleed. Bleed till they, I assume, die and you don't get caught. Till they die, but you can't trace it back to her. Yeah. It's so wild. And she says it so casually. And I really enjoyed that bit. Well, actually, my favorite part is it felt like Roz was really listening. Like taking notes. Roz was taking notes. Yeah. She was writing him at journal. Yeah. Yeah. That's why I don't think it's uncouth. I assume that Niles' reaction is well-earned because she's clearly... I mean, she's Gert. We know what happens next season. Again, this is how we're teeing her up on Daphne's birthday. Yeah. It's also when Niles, his gift, I guess, was the trip to Hawaii to Daphne. And he tells Daphne. This is the Niles offense. None of that bit about Gertrude sucking. Why would you give your gift to your loved one in front of everyone else, especially when it's a trip for just the two of them? Well, she already just got a lingerie in front of everyone. You know, what's a trip to Hawaii? That's not the point. The point is like you guys can have an intimate moment where you're going to go on a call. Like, why are you doing that in front of everybody else? It's so weird. There's no boundaries with this group. So it kind of is on brand. I think it's about boundaries. It's just weird. Like, why haven't you already told her about this? I didn't really bother me that he was announcing this in front of everybody, but. It's insane. If we went to your apartment, we visited you, Curt. And you then, like, proceed to tell your husband about what you're going to do on a trip. You're like, what are you doing? Why didn't you? Why haven't you done this? I really don't think it would be as weird as you thinking it is right. I really don't. When have you ever heard anyone do this? I think the weirder part of this is not that a husband is, or I guess a boyfriend is telling his girlfriend that he got a gift for her on her birthday in front of all the other gifts. I think the weirder part is that this is a grown woman getting gifts at a birthday party. Like, do you still get gifts? No. I think it's not that common that you have, like, even if you throw a party or, like, have people over, it's not very common that you get, like, a traditional wrapped gift. No, I do not get gifts by the man and his father that I live with and occasionally clean their apartment. You said that really confusing. Or his employee. Yeah. Oh, right. I thought you were talking about your own life for a second. No. I got really confused. In, Ryan, your defense, you haven't actually seen Daphne working that much, so I get it. I forgot she still lives there. That's going to come up, I think, a few more times this season, if I have to guess. I do think at the end of the scene we get one nice little last bit, which is where Daphne relights the candle because she wants a new wish because her mom's being so annoying. That's how the scene ended, right? Yeah. Yeah. Not what? Curt, don't just rush past things, Curt. We got a powder room alert. Oh, really? Yeah, they throw Gertrude into the powder room, which is like it's the worst person we've ever had in there. Okay, first of all, I genuinely didn't even have that in my notes. I did not realize there was a powder room at all. I heard this. I would expect that from Brad, but from you? Okay, but more importantly, you can't just say the words. There's a cadence to this. Let's hear it. There's a powder room alert. Let me just pop into the powder room real fast. Thank you. Brad, how excited were you? I'm always excited. Gertrude's in the bathroom. Yeah, I was hoping she wasn't going to come out. I'm a little fuming right now because I didn't get to witness the powder room. Like this is, this is untenable. It happens right before the candle thing. That's when Daphne does that is because she's just left the room to go to the bathroom. He's right, yeah. Yeah, man, you're losing your fastball. Take us to the next scene. We get a title card and she's the carrots. Roz is too lonely to go home and too embarrassed to go alone to her family reunion. Frasier comforts her and offers to be her date. We've established this in the past. When Roz is off, it's my least favorite Roz. The only thing I actually liked about this scene was that they told us where Alice was, which was shocking. They actually said in the scene that she was with her grandparents in Wisconsin because it feels like in most episodes they just ignore Alice. I think in most episodes you can kind of assume she's in school. She's got a babysitter. She's in school. She like there's all kinds of things you just assume. I think in this case, because they were setting up Roz is going to spend the night. They really needed to establish this small child is not by themselves overnight. I'm proud of them for doing that because with this sitcom, anything's possible. So I'm actually proud of that. I thought we were going to see Alice later. It's really weird we didn't. Really? Well, we can get there, but I actually thought that too. I thought there was going to be a bit about it. I thought there was going to be a whole bit about her. That she was going to walk in and yell, Frasier. Yeah, yeah. It didn't occur to me at all until they teed it up. I guess we should. They did say something in the scene that I thought was really, really funny when Roz is giving Frasier compliments and Frasier's like, you know, he wishes women thought that. And then Roz says he's the broccoli of dating or he says he's the broccoli of dating. He says that. Love that. He loves that. Which makes more sense. The completely nonsensical title card and she's the carrots. Yep. I was waiting for that. I, as always, don't read them anymore because they're stupid. I don't get that at all. Now that you've given me the context. It's not great. It's just better. They like to have title cards that briefly kind of a little bit connect to the scene. This is going to be the one scene we get before what we're going to get next. So there's two things here for me as I'm watching this. Roz talks about how her family makes fun of her because she can't get a man. And it's like, Frasier's like, oh, that's not true. But it's definitely true. I mean, we've proven that. Now in New Frasier, we've confirmed it. Well, whoa, whoa. From season one, Brad. Oh, fair enough. Fair enough. And so like, we know this is. She just doesn't. I don't know why she'd be so butthurt about this. She kind of owns it every other time. But whatever. She's, you know, about to go see her family. Fine. Then they start to get into the, like, start hitting it that Frasier and Roz are going to get it on this episode. I was like, I was so excited. I was so ready. But my problem with this scene in particular is what it is building towards I don't think works. There is no chemistry. Curt, we're going to talk about that. Okay. You're saying in this scene it doesn't work? What I'm saying in this scene, there's no buildup. There's no chemistry. It's literally, they're sitting on a couch. Two friends having a conversation. Frasier's like, oh, you want to watch a movie? Like, it is so humdrum. This beat made sense. What we jump to is a whole different matter. Well, let's jump to that and then we can talk about all of it. Okay, yeah. Good idea. Roz wakes up in Frasier's arms. She tries and fails to sneak out and ultimately leaves in a panic. Worst, worst, worst, worst, worst way to fucking handle this. I was so mad. Yeah. I'm with you. I'm with you. Yeah. Yes. There's no, you're right. There's no buildup. There's no, like, ridiculous thing that happens. I thought they were going to get drunk, but like nothing. They go out of their way to say there's no alcohol. Yeah. Last scene, I was like, oh, we've got, we're going to get it this episode. Okay, great. And they're like, we're going to get it right now. You're going to miss it. I was like, no. I thought that the next scene would be like them like yelling at each other. And then all of a sudden started like making out like from passion. I missed the no alcohol thing. You're saying that they didn't get drunk for that? They didn't. Because when Niles arrives, Frasier offers drinks. And Niles says, Oh, I'm not sure we should introduce alcohol into the situation. I assume they got drunk when they were on the couch. I don't think there was any alcohol there. Yeah. They didn't show that. Yeah. They didn't show it. I think it's one of the few actual choices the writers made to mitigate the potential backlash to this choice. I agree. They didn't want a world in which Frasier and Ross slept together drunk because it would potentially be seen as. That's way, way weirder than though. Yeah. So they get it on and they choose to fall asleep in each other's arms and then both wake up confused and embarrassed. It's terrible. Can I make a comparison real quick? Please. Because there is, in the show Seinfeld, there is an episode where Jerry and Elaine, who had dated in the past, they decide to start sleeping together again. And it's one episode where they go through the trials of like kind of flirting with the idea and then deciding, I think we're going to do this. It's having a sexual relationship, thinking it's going well, and then the whole thing falling apart. It's one episode. They do the whole thing. But it works really well because they're showing us how they got there. They're showing us why they're doing it. And then they show us why it doesn't work. Yeah. And they show us why their friendship still does and why they go back to that. And it doesn't ruin everything. Yeah, we pretty much know what we're doing in there. This episode skips almost all of that. It just says, well, they did it. So just accept that they did it. And then jumps ahead to the fallout. And we don't even really get to see it fall apart. We just, it automatically falls apart. And it's just a scramble to save the friendship. It's almost stupid. It's absurd. I 100% agree. There's no tipping point. You know, there's nothing that really gets them there besides that they're lonely. Yeah. There's no flirting. There's no kind, like, she makes one comment about Frasier's the kind of guy every woman should want. That's not, yeah. But she says it like a sister says to a brother. So what do you think happened? Let's speculate a little bit. Since they didn't do it, we got an open canvas here. What do you think happened? What can possibly happen? This headcanon this. I just, it's so hard because we get a lot of fun bits, I think, of them kind of teasing each other for having had sex and it not going well. We get a small amount of that. I don't think we get enough of it. It makes me like the last episode a little less, the whole little bit. Like, if that happened, like, four or five episodes down the road, I think it would be a little funnier. But the fact that it was the next episode is like, oh, okay. I'm with you. I was shocked it was this episode because that felt to me like the bit you do, like, two years later after you've healed. Yeah. Yeah, the way they both reacted, you're right. It makes way more sense if that was way later. Yeah. I really didn't think it was this episode. The way they handled it in that episode, it seemed like she's talking about this guy, Roger, she really wishes she could still fuck. And Frasier's like, well, once upon a time, I fucked you. And it turns out she's rubbing this in his face, like, the day after. It's really weird that Roger's a through line for this. Yeah, crazy. Yeah, I have no speculation, Ryan. What do you got? She must have just been spiraling and just thinking about Roger. She's about to text him. He's like, no, don't text her. And then he throws her phone. And then I guess she's just into it. I don't. Nothing back sounds. I think the only explanation to me is like that version of like maybe when we're both 40, if neither of us is married, we'll get married. Like some version of them just like, well, maybe, you know, we've been friends a long time. We get along really well. Like maybe we should work. I don't think there was any talking. It has to have been a whirlwind because they both wake up with that eyes wide. I don't think there is any talking. I think they just they were laying on the couch. So they got closer and closer. Somebody started kissing the other one and then they ended up in the bedroom. I don't think there was any talking. Because I think of one of them talked. I mean, I'm treating them like real human beings. I think of one of them talked. They would have stopped it. Well, see, I was thinking they kind of logicked themselves into being together. And then once the sex was so bad that she just tried to run away. I don't think there was any talking. I just I'm not going to get over the fact that they both wake up with that eyes wide open thing like they were drunk and made a weird drunk decision. I think they got drunk. I'm not sure you can't tell me otherwise. So here's my question. When she's trying to leave and he stands up, he's naked, right? Oh, yeah. And he's like super proud of it. And it's definitely a problem. Yes. And they showed us like this one view where he looked like flappy and floppy. It was not like a good look on Frasier. I mean, it's what he looks like. I don't know. Sorry, I don't think about naked Frasier that much. I didn't like the way that he goes out of his way to be staring at her while he's naked. It's like, dude, you're her boss. What's wrong with you? Well, also, I think he's a little bit hurt and confused because he can tell that she's upset. She wants to leave so quickly. Yeah. But he keeps rubbing it in. He's like, well, why don't we get coffee? Why don't we get dinner? He keeps trying to like. Rubbing it in. And he's trying to make sure it's not weird. But what I'm saying is like by trying to make it not weird, he's making it weirder. Like instead of just kind of like, OK, you got to go to the title guy. Sure. I will accept your excuse to get us out of this awkward moment and just let you go. Bye. And we'll talk about it later when we can calm down. But instead, he's just like, oh, your excuse. What if I find a way around that excuse to like force you into talking to me? Like it's just not the time. I actually really like both of their reactions to their clearly drunk hookup. I think that was I think they played it off very well. I just think she might have said title guy about 14 times in the scene. That's what you would do, though. You're panicked. You're trying to come up with an excuse and you're trying to leave. And she's trying to get a boot on that's really tall. And it's hard to do that. And given what she says the next day about Roger, I'm surprised she didn't say, I've got to get to the title guy because we're going to fuck. Like I'm going to fuck him, too. Obviously. Get me a deal. My tiles. Maybe Roger is the title guy. Frazier spirals out, feeling like he ruined his friendship with Roz. She reaffirms his fears by going to Wisconsin without him. Niles convinces Daphne to take her mom on what was supposed to be their romantic getaway to Hawaii. I'm just going to address it now. This is a strong Marty episode. Yeah. Yeah. It is a strong. I was hoping you were going to get there without me pushing you. But yes. Thank you, Ryan. Wait a minute. I'm a little surprised by this because I don't have a problem with Marty in this episode. But I'm surprised, given what you feel about his being a good or bad person, I would have thought all of his sort of jokes that Frazier poking at him would have rubbed you the wrong way. The first joke is just so good. It's so good. It's so good. It's so good. See the paper yet? No, I haven't. Big story about how Roz's purse spent the night on the coffee table. It's a good line, yeah. Yeah. I mean, this is nowhere near the worst of Marty we've ever seen. So this is good. He's not perfect, for the record. There's some problem bits. But he starts off so, so good. Yeah. His opening salvo is phenomenal. That's true. Because it drives Frazier crazy. Because Frazier did not see it coming. And his face changed so quickly. In an era where there is no newspapers, it's such a weird setup. Did you see the newspaper? It comes out of nowhere. Well, and it's a double punch to Frazier because if she left on good terms and was like clearly excited about what they did, it would still be awkward that his dad noticed the purse. But I think because he just had a traumatic moment with Roz and immediately his dad is like, and I know too. It's like so, so uncomfortable. Do you buy that Marty could recognize Roz's purse though? I do because Roz was over and the only other options are Gert and Daphne. And I think the purse was at the same exact spot the scene before, like before Marty left. I think the purse was there. If we were at a party and there was one to seven ladies there and they left the purse down. Sorry, not one to seven. There's three. I'm saying you, you wouldn't know. You would have no idea. If there was a single female or there was everyone that had a purse there, doesn't matter. You couldn't identify a single one of them. I think he saw Daphne leave and he saw Gertrude leave. He didn't actually see Roz leave. It's not in this episode, but we also know from the next episode that she can hear his letterman playing. He probably can hear what they're doing. So he knows something's happening. He knows it's not Daphne or Gertrude that's in there. I'm just saying there's like a timeline bit where he could have just gone out and met someone. Another example of how weird it is that these episodes were only an episode apart and there wasn't anything in between. So weird. Yeah, true. Anything else? Uh, yeah. Daphne makes a reference to her dad walking her down the aisle and it's just, we know it doesn't pay off. We know it don't happen. I agree with you. That was bizarre to hear since they never talk about the dad after the next episode, essentially. That part's, I think, the craziest bit. Cause like, we're making this huge deal out of it this episode. Obviously we make some deal out of it next episode. And then he is, I don't think, talked about the rest of the series. No. Yeah. No, he's completely ignored the rest. And we do know Daphne gives up on her dreams very quickly and then develops new dreams in an instant. That part was established last episode, but it's, it is really weird to hear this line where she's just like, it's always been my dream for my dad to walk me down the aisle. At the airport, Daphne and Gertrude head to Hawaii. Niles heads off to Manchester to find her dad. And Frazier is off to the heartland to save his friendship. Marty gets a robot dog. Gert works Marty in the start of the scene. Yeah. Oh my God. He won't let it go. It was great. When we revisit it, I think it's totally justified. Cause she takes him to town quickly. I think in this scene, we get a nice bit of twisting and turning. First, everybody thinks we're just going to drop him off for the Hawaii trip. And then it's revealed actually Niles is going off to Manchester. And then even Frazier's going to the airport. He's, he's off to, to meet Ross in Wisconsin. I didn't read the first bit as a twist, right? Cause we know what's happening. I didn't even clock that it was like a reveal in the scene. Sure. But it's just fun. The way that, um, the, the structure of the scene, the Wisconsin reveal still surprised me despite knowing what Niles was doing. So yeah, there's that. The main thing that I want to talk about the scene though, cause this is, we've talked about the special effects on Frazier, not being at all good. Um, this is maybe the laziest and worst green screen work I've ever seen. In the history of America. You're talking about like when they're out in the, on the street. I'm talking about when they're, they're getting out of the car to get in the airport. And the, the camera moves in such a way that it looks like the car is floating on top of the road. It really looks like that everyone else was moving except for the car. That like, that's how bad it looked. It was shocking. It was, it was impossible to avoid the fact that it was green screened. It even, they even had that sort of halo that happens where they haven't done a good job of like cropping the person in. So you kind of see the halo of the lighting around them, around where the green screen touches. It's, it's shocking how bad this was. Yeah. Easily, easily the worst effects we've seen unless you've watched our Die Hard series. Easily the worst we've seen in Frazier. I'm going to tell you what, I don't know if I saw anything in Die Hard that was worse than this. The explosion in, in the second movie is definitely worse. Oh. Yeah. The airport, when they blow, when they throw five grenades into the, uh. I know what you're talking about. I'm not convinced that's worse. Anyway, it doesn't matter. Anything else for this scene? Yeah. This is where we get introduced to the robot dog idea. Yes. Marty is so excited. I think it's fine. I think he should be, right? He was mad at first about the robot dog. Well, cause he, he was mad because he didn't get one. And then Frazier reveals he does get one here, right? Mm-hmm. And I know, we were all excited to see the robot dog at that point, right? Absolutely. Absolutely. A robot dog from 2002? You can't get any better than that. And this was like a, a hot toy that year. Like, this, this robot dog. It looks familiar. Yeah. I think this was a real thing, right? Yeah. It was everywhere. Yeah. It was everywhere. It was the real thing. Yeah. This did not look like, oh, it's just a vague dog-shaped robot. Like, this was exactly that toy from that era that was very specific. And I, yeah, I don't think it made it out of this year. Like, for some reason, we haven't continued that tech. The robot dog generation has not become a thing. I mean, obviously there's like the, that one company that makes those creepy looking no head dogs. Yeah, I know. Oh, the Boston Dynamics? Yeah. They clearly got it from this toy, but that's it. It's either, you're either getting this toy in this year or you're joining that company. Frasier meets Roz's family, who are a bunch of catty bitches. It confused Roz, cautiously lets him pretend to be Roger. A catty bitch we're familiar with? I forgot we'd met her. Oh, really? I mean, it's been a while since we've done that. I was shocked this was, the time we saw her at the CBGBs, that wasn't the first time she had appeared. And I'll do my intro because I have to. Denise is played by Suzanne Cryer, best known as Ashley Walker on Two Guys, A Girl, and A Pizza Place. Great. Well, you already did that, so I don't care. It's an important fact. I will say that every time she's on the show. It has already been read into the record, Brad. You don't have to say it every time she shows up. Thank you. You'll just do my recording and just play it. Thank you. Great. Just let him believe that's just going to happen, Ryan. Let's move on. She felt pretty much the same. Yeah, I think the characterization was pretty on point. We didn't get to meet the husband. Do we meet the husband here? I forget. We meet the husband. And the most shocking thing to me is he introduces himself with his full name and ends it with MetLife. Yeah. Is that how people are supposed to introduce themselves by their job or the company they work for? If you're Hank Hill. Craig Dawson, MetLife. I tell you what. So, I mean, we learned a little bit more about Roger, even though he's not actually there. He's a trash collector, which Frasier as a trash collector would be amazing. That was a fun reveal. I think that's, I assume that's going to be more fun going backwards than forwards. I would think so. That was a crazy thing where he just starts riffing on being a trash collector. Yes. And I know Ryan brought it up earlier, but it is so weird that Alice is not in this scene. It is really weird. That's a good point. Yeah. It's not weird until they really draw attention. Because of what happens earlier. Yeah. No, here. Here, because they're going to be like, oh. But they said something really, really bizarre where they're just like, yeah, when Alice sees you, she's going to freak. I think Frasier says, she always mistakes me for Raza's boss. It's weird, isn't it? Correct. Which is a funny line, unless you don't pay it off. Here's what I think happened, honestly. They probably wrote something, some bit, about the kid showing up and having a weird interaction and laughs ensue. But child actors are notoriously unreliable. It's possible that the kid just couldn't sell the bit and so they cut it. Or it could be that they couldn't schedule the kid because it's hard to get child actors because there's so many rules about them. You don't have to explain this. Just cut the line that says you're going to see Alice. Like, we just don't have to introduce the idea that that would happen. Every time you say see Alice, it sounds like you're saying see Alice the drug. I never said see Alice. You said it twice in that sentence. You absolutely right. You did. You did. You did. When you go to see Alice. But it sounded like when you go get your dick hard from see Alice. Thank you. Wow. I didn't hear it until Brad said it twice and then you called it out. That's interesting. Is this what it's like to be you all the time, Curt? I mean... Marty calls robot dog tech support. In case you're wondering why I like this episode for Marty, it's this fucking scene. I figured it had to be. Go on. There's nothing to say. Eddie's smarter than Marty. We know that. But it's really fun that they spelled it out for us. They haven't done that ever, I don't believe. Usually Marty and Eddie are on the same team and it's horrible. It's like an axis of evil type of thing. But in this case, it's great. Until the scrambled eggs at the end, I was like, this is a useless scene. I'm talking about it. I thought all this stuff in most constant was useless. This was great. This was world building, Bradley. World building. You're right. We're painting a rich picture here. I'm with you, Brad. I think this scene, you know, it's fine. It's a nice little interlude of humor. I don't have a problem with it, but it's not that great. It didn't do much for me. We're two seasons and two episodes in. We've established Marty's useless. It's nice to put a bold sentence out there. It's been like, Marty's fucking useless. This was nice. I appreciated it. See, I think you were focused on, this is a dig at Marty. Isn't that great? And I was focused on, this is a dog bit where the dog is like playing with a toy and it's supposed to be cute and it's just kind of boring. That's not what happened. That's not what the scene was. We'll talk about the scrambled eggs scene. Yeah. That's not what this scene was. I will say the scrambled eggs made the scene better. That's where you and I depart. The entire family is wrapped listening to Frasier play Roger. Even that bitch Denise is jealous. Roz and Frasier end up with a heart to heart on the porch where they vow to remain friends. So we get a little Frasier improv, which is always good. Anytime we've seen it, it's been great. Turns out he can also just impersonate people at a will. Great at it. I have no other notes at all. I was a little surprised how excited Roz was. Like Roz was so happy that Frasier did such a good job pretending to be Roger. Yeah. I thought she would try to rebuke it a little bit and she'd. No, she was so excited about it because it made her look good. Well, and even though she fled and went to Wisconsin without him, they had talked about in that one scene, this is what she wanted him to do in the first place. Like he was fulfilling her original wish, which was to make her look good for her family. We saw the cracks in the sister and MetLife. Boy, I tell you what. I think too quickly. It was like two lines and they were just fell apart. They were just arguing with each other over nothing. Like very vicious in front of the family. I mean, this really should have been two episodes. It should have been one episode that gets them together and then another episode where he goes to repair. Oh my God. Where he spends a whole episode with her family. That would have been so much better. Yes. And we could have taken time to, you know, watch a terrible moment in their weird friendship. Yeah. A hundred percent. Oh my God. Great punch out, Curt. Brad, where were you on that one? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Ryan, for the upside down, there's one little moment that I noticed that, I don't know if you noticed it, but I'm going to highlight it for you. She says when they're discussing this happening. Yes, we noted it. They had a few close calls earlier in the show. Of course we noticed that. It was, first of all, it's a weird sentence. Yeah. It's a weird moment where she goes, hey, look, this almost happened a couple of times, but every time we were like, we don't want to ruin our friendship. Turns out that irrelevant. It doesn't. Even though both of them acted like crazy people afterwards. By the way, even though the story she tells him to reassure him that they're always going to be friends is about her not being friends with the last guy. I said I had no notes. That was bananas. That was absolutely the weird. She just goes, yeah, last time I was on this porch, I said, full well knowing that we would never be friends again, that we'll always be friends. And then the next thing out of her mouth is, Frasier will always be friends. And they hugged. I was like, what the? It's insane. This is another one. Would it have been more fun right side round where you're like, oh, that's it? Roz leaves. She quits her job and goes to another state because that's in play in this moment, the way they teed that up. But no, it turns out it was an earnest moment. Yeah, I really don't know what they were going for with this. I don't know what the writers were going for. And I don't know what Roz in that moment is going for, like what she's trying to communicate. It felt like they were just trying to wrap it all up in one episode. Yeah, but it doesn't make sense. Basically, they're saying like, it's different for you, Frasier. But they don't then change the words to make that true. She just does a real earnest hug. And we can believe that because we're coming from the upside down. But in the right side round, you should absolutely think this is the last time we ever see Roz. Yeah, right? Niles finds Daphne's dad, who gives his blessing for the wedding. When Niles announces his intention to reunite Harry with Gert, Harry throws him out. Back in a familiar place. So this was cool. I was sick of being in Wisconsin. I'm glad to be in Manchester. Thankfully, they said that again so I could remember where we were. And that's all there is to say about this. Now, he gets the blessing from Papa Moon. That's the bit to talk about. He does that in 12 seconds. I was going to say eight. But yeah, I get that you don't respect Gertrude. It's insane to do that with your own daughter. I think the thing that kind of struck me is that we don't know how long they've been dating at this point. But we can presume they've at least known each other a long time. This dad doesn't seem to have any idea that his daughter is even in a relationship. Does that strike anybody else as odd? Like, I know he seems like kind of an absent guy. That's at Harry Moon. Yeah, because even if Daphne told him every day, I still don't think he would listen to her. So that wasn't that surprising to me. That's fair. From the upside down, we see that with the Moon brothers. Yeah. Okay. You won me over. I liked when Niles brought up Gertrude and the whole bar got silent. Yeah, I mean, that was good. I don't know. That's so hack. It's a little hack. It's a little hack, but it also didn't make any sense, which is why I kind of enjoyed it. Because who would all know? I mean, I guess Gertrude makes that much of an opinion of a feeling. The only thing that would have made it more hack is if there was like a needle drop. I'm here to reunite you with your wife. Yeah, right. If Niles did that, that would have been really funny. I did like that he gets thrown out of the bar. And then we also know that the first scene in the next episode, he's coming back in the bar. Harry Moon is very good at throwing people out of bar. He made that look supernatural. Yes. But yeah, we know that Niles is going to get kicked out five more times than we saw. Yeah. And I got to tell you, I don't feel like Niles has the gumption for that. So interesting. Obviously he does. Fraser plays this out with Eddie and the robot dog exchanging tricks. When Eddie loses, he knocks the robot over. I think this is the worst scrambled eggs thing we've ever seen. I'm not sure that's true. Explain. It was really dumb. All the things you were complaining about with Marty being embarrassing is totally lost when he's not talking on the phone. Instead, we're just watching weird robot dog tricks and a dog kind of matching them. It was very dumb. I don't know what to take from it. I mean, I want to fight you, but it was boring. It was pointless. I didn't get much of anything out of it other than I guess nostalgia. But at least it was long, right? At least it was long. Well, Brad, how did you feel about this episode? It is hard not to think of this episode without knowing what happens in the next episode. And really knowing how much this episode does not help that episode is really waning on me. I'm going to give it one of my lower grades. So Professor Bradley, which is my new nickname that will catch on eventually. I'm going to give it a C minus. Why is... Oh, because you're grading it. I was like, why is Professor Bradley getting a grade? Okay. I mean, there was a couple of funny bits, but it was not a great episode. I was not a fan of it. Does it affect your score from last episode at all? Oh, I would say my... I would say that episode goes down to a C. Great question. Yeah. I still think I liked the last episode better than this episode. I think you answered that very correctly. Yeah. Seabags McGee, what do you have to say about this episode? First of all, I want to say that I just didn't think this one was all that funny. I didn't laugh that much. I thought it was kind of boring, to be honest. And easily, this could be kind of just a mid-episode. Except they decided this was the time they're going to put Roz and Frasier together. And they, we all agree, completely fumbled that in every way. I just don't understand the choice if they weren't going to do it in a way that was interesting or reasonable or make any sense. Or funny. How about funny? It was bad. And I think it actively hurts the show and the characters that they did that. This is the worst episode we've watched. 60 out of 60. Whoa. Oh my God. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I'm not sure I'm there, but whoa. I know. I'm confused as the spot I have to say that now. Yeah. Now I'm starting to think I came too high of a score. How do you have me really thinking, Curtis? If that wasn't the plot line, or if they'd done that plot line better, this could have just been like, ah, another kind of humdrum episode. But this was humdrum plus show-changing choice that ended badly. Well, it's not a show-changing choice, though, is it? Well, no. It could have been. I think it does affect their relationship, though. Yeah, for like a half episode, I guess. But even that it is a standalone thing that you can forget as quickly as they did in the episode, I think that's damning. Like, this is too big of a moment to gloss past. That's a knock on the series. Yeah, I think you're right. Oh, Brian. I gotta know. From the Upside Down, where are you? So, I think you guys are underrating how embarrassing Marty is in this episode. That does carry a lot of humor. Past episode of the series. It's not, but there, I mean, there's, Frasier has some strong moments in Wisconsin. It is absolutely disappointing that this is where they get it on. That is an obvious black mark, and they handled it so stupidly, so poorly. Both short-term writing and long-term writing, it is not good. It's not well executed. I ranked it a five. I think you talked me down a little, Curt. It's definitely not the worst episode we've seen, even factoring some of those things. But, you know, it's in the fours. This is bottom dollar effort, for sure. And that's not even factoring that it's towards the end of the season, as well, and leads into a bad season finale. Yeah. Is this a three? This might be a three. You might be right, Curt. I don't know. Yeah. I don't think this is as bad as a Steven Root episode. Yeah. Again, where he's great, but, like, that episode sucked. And I don't think this is as bad as the Dream episode. But, man, it's not much better, is it? They're really limping into the end of season nine. Maybe they all got fired, and they're like, we've got to pump out two more episodes. I still believe in my heart of hearts that season ten was the worst season, but season nine is starting out bleak. Not a great start. Yeah. Yeah. Be interesting to find out what happens next. As a final score, I give it a 4-2. Okay. Well, Daphne got many gifts for her birthday. All of them bad. But can we come up with something better? Perhaps even more challenging. Can we come up with something worse? It's a segment we're calling Present a Present. Oh, that's a good name. Good job, Curtis. So, what we're going to do is we're going to start with the greatest gift. The most wonderful gift we could give. And I think we want to do this to Daphne herself, or would you rather do to generic? It's irrelevant, right? Curtis, a good gift's a good gift, a bad gift's a bad gift. Well, we're going to assume Daphne is the birthday girl, so we're going to get her the greatest possible gift. Ryan, why don't you tell us what you're going to get? I'm a big fan. As I grow older, especially, I'm a big fan of the consumable as a gift. I've really enjoyed the, like, I got a Beer of the Month Club gift once. That was amazing. I think if I've got, like, Frasier money, I'm doing, like, an Around the World Beer of the Month Club. Sorry, you're going to have to explain what that means. Do you just mean international beers, or do you mean, like, you need to travel to the place to get the beer? Yeah, again, this is just a consumable. You don't need to send me on a trip. I don't need any of that business. Just drop a box of beer off at my door. I'll be thrilled. You just, instead of getting a Bud Light, you want to get a Heineken in the mail. A Heineken Light, Curt. Don't be insane. Yeah, yeah, of course. I want to be, I want to act like I'm taking a trip, but also just still be on my couch, you know, still watching Frasier season nine. That might be the grimmest thing you've ever said. No, I got a Beer of the Month Club gift during, I think it was during COVID. And I'll tell you, it was a real uplifting thing. You get a box of, like, 24 beers in bottles. It was insane. Was it a variety pack? It was. You got four beers, four types of beer. So it was. Three each. Three each, yeah. Oh, it was just, every time it was just delighted. It really brought my day around, again, in dark times of COVID. I get that. That's fun. That's nice. And it's recurring. It's like, it's not a one-time gift. That's right. I think it went six months. And there's just, at no point, if someone dropped a beer, a bunch of beers off on my doorstep, would I be mad, you know? Well, I'm going to pin you down a little bit. Because are you saying that your greatest gift is the concept of the month club? Or are you picking a specifically beer as your greatest possible gift? I wrote down a couple of options. I think a cheese of the month would be fun. I think a chocolate of the month would be fun. But you could also do, like, if someone were to give me, like, Home Chef as, like, six months of Home Chef, that would be pretty sweet, too. Even if I had to cook it myself as someone who's a terrible cook, like, I think that would be kind of cool. Now, Curt, that's where you're supposed to do our tag for Home Chef, where we give them a discount. We're still negotiations to get the ad. All right. I'll scratch that. But MeUndies, we can talk about MeUndies. Greatest gift for the holidays. I think another fun one would be, like, a wine advent calendar or, like, a whiskey advent calendar, one of those kind of things. You've mentioned much. I want you to pick one and tell us which one is the one for Daphne. I think, from what I know of Daphne, I think the beer of the month is the move. She seems like a beer gal. She's from Manchester. They all have to do that. That's a wink, by the way. I'm still pretty convinced they're all Irish. But, you know, she seems like she'd enjoy it in a nice round of the pub every month. All right. Well, let's compare that to you, Brad. What are you going to get her? Yeah. I mean, the one thing that she has never had, and that's her own apartment. You know, Fraser has all this money. Ooh. Get her her own apartment. You're going to get her an apartment as a gift? What are you talking about? If you're Fraser Cranon and have that much money, you can afford to buy her an apartment. I would get her an apartment in a heartbeat. First of all, you're you. Second of all, are you giving her an apartment in perpetuity? What do you do? You're going to pay her rent every month? Sorry, buy her a condo, whatever you would call her. Buy her a place to live. How about that? We're going to give her a mortgage. Jesus Christ. I bought you a place to live. You just have to sign on this dotted line. And by the way, they want a credit check. That's what happens on game shows. Obviously, if you gave her a vacation home in Malibu, that would be better. But like, that's not a thing people give as gifts. It's Fraser. Anything's possible. You asked me what the best gift is. Better than the beer of the month club. Okay. If that's how we're playing this. If money's not an object, is that what we're doing? We said greatest gift. We didn't provide. We did not establish a lot of rules for this game. No, not at all. So why are you giving her an apartment? Why don't you buy LeBron's mansion or whatever that he can't sell? Because that's for someone else to get. I just don't understand the line you've set where you're like, I have unlimited money, but I'm going to give her. Let's try this. Let's put a dollar value at $1,000. We can get her in a flood. No, I'm just, I love how detailed our games are. I think this was a lack of detail that's left us here. For the record, I created the most elaborate game possible. And then Ryan came up with a better idea without even trying. So. Okay. So, sorry. A thousand dollar gift. Okay. I would get her a tea set. What? Yeah. A tea set. What do you, what's a tea set? What does that mean to you? Like fancy teacups with a fancy tea? Like, oh, governor, tea. That's what I would get her. What could that, I think if you got like the Queen of England's tea set, that's going to be like $200. No. But it's not $1,000. No. Oh, that's the kind of thing that for sure, there is a wide range of values. Like you can get like a $20 one on Amazon, or you can shell out 10 grand for some kind of an antique one. Yeah. Yeah. A hundred percent. You get a nice antique one. And I think, I think at a thousand, you've landed on the worst possible mix of it, right? Where it's going to be what? Yeah. It's going to be what? Like George Bush's tea set for whenever the Queen was in town that one time. It's like that app that you just pay a thousand dollars to say you bought it. Yeah. Is that a thing? When the iPhone first came out, yeah, somebody put out an app that was $1,000 to buy. And it was just like, you download, it was just like a picture on your phone. It really was, it was barely an app. It was just, it was just like, I think it was just like a picture of champagne or something. That's the tea. That's exactly the tea set you bought. Yeah. There's just pictures of the champagne on each item. Curtis, how about you? Yeah. This is really hard because I also was going with, there are no rules. So my original pitch is going to be a new fiance. Nice. That's another good. I had that written down too. You could get that for under a thousand, no problem. But if I have to, to ground this in some kind of real world item. I love that you said an arbitrary rule to obviously make amends for the situation and then no backup. Can't even answer. Oh, no plan. Sorry. Not a backup plan. Here's the best part. I always do this. I love to ask people questions. I can't answer. Yeah. I'm just going to, I'm going to hit the starting point for you. Like you would get the nicest Turkey club, which would be like $300 at a fancy. Well, you're joking. But I, I do think that I'm just thinking about the life she lives. You know, she's living with this guy, Frazier. It's so stuffy. I feel like what she really needs is because she's not stuffy. She, she's not a particularly pretentious person. I think she needs like a just $1,000 gift card to Domino's. Like she just needs, she needs trash food. Jesus Christ. Right. That first nowadays, that would still be an endless supply of Domino's. Yeah. Right. Well, real time. If she, if you gave it to her in 2002, she wouldn't have used up a thousand dollars of Domino's at this point. I don't actually mean specifically a thousand of Domino's. I was starting to think maybe I should get her like a Michelin star meal, but she gets that like every other week with Niles, I'm sure. So it's the opposite. Yeah. So I'm trying to go the other way. I like where your head's at though. It's, it's clearly a consumable and you're just saying of the people is what you're saying. Yeah. She needs a kind of, uh, I guess that's basically your idea though, huh? Yeah. Pretty much. Yeah. Shit. Oh my God. I just thought of it. This is, this is the gift I would get anybody, especially, she's not a homeowner, but she's got her own room. I think this will work. It's a bookshelf, but it's a door. So her, her doorway to her bedroom is now hidden behind a bookshelf and you have to know the right book to pull to get in. So none of these crazy people she's living with and interact with all the time. If she wants away from them, she just goes to her room. They can't get in. They don't even know where the door is. I want you to draw this out a little bit more because she's living in Frazier's apartment, right? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. That's not changing. You're not changing that. You wouldn't. She, it wouldn't make sense where we're at in the storyline of Frazier. Are you buying her a cavity into Frazier's wall or are you shrinking her bedroom? No, no, no. I'm taking her existing door and basically stapling onto it a shelving. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So it will, yeah. It's not a hidden bookshelf. They just don't know how to work the bookshelf door system. I've told every person I've ever met who's owned a home that they need to build a secret room with a bookshelf door. But that's not what you've done here. You have a known room. And you want to make it a hard-to-access door via book. We're making do with what we've got. And the advantage here is it's not, see, they know where the room is. They know where the door is. But the workaround to make it still hers is that the specific book you need, they don't have access. They don't know which one. Yeah, it's really stupid. I mean, they would have to watch her for like 12 seconds. Also, it's going to be about hand height. It's going to be about where the doorknob is. I think it's a code. You know how like on your phone you have to put in like four numbers to unlock it? It's like she's got a pool on four different books in a specific order. Kind of like that. I've made her life so much better by accessing her room this hard. Next time she gets hammered, she's so screwed. She's going to be like, oh, I've hit every book now. I can't get in. I think we need to make a choice as a group. Now voting for yourself. What is actually the greatest gift? Tea set, beer of the month club, or an amazing bookshelf? I think I got to go with Ryan's. And that really scares me to say. You were the only one who understood the assignment. We thought we could just make up anything in the world. And then got caught with our pants down. I was just listening to the host. I'll just weigh in and just say Curt's was the worst version of the secret room. So Brad, you do win. But because of Curt's, I think, negligence at this point. Well, you win because of our negligence. So it totally makes sense. I will take one on the chin that my idea was the worst version of a thing. But what about the worst gift, period? What is the absolute worst gift you could give? Who wants to go first? I'll go first again. There's two types of gifts that I think are really bad. And I assume everyone's on board with this one. What the hell is a donation for someone? Don't donate and be like, I donated for you. I don't need the street cred of a donation. Like, you want to donate, just go do that. Don't do that on my time. I don't know. If I want to donate, I'll do it. Don't do it for me. I think that's like the free space, personally. I don't know. I don't even know why that's an option. I'll say, I don't necessarily have a problem with that, especially in a world where a lot of times people are like, eh, you know, I don't want to clutter my house up with bullshit. Like, we don't need to give away gifts. But I can see where somebody would feel like, I still have to give something. And this is a way of like doing something good for the world and putting that money to good use and making you feel good. Why did you even come here? Like, you could have said, I didn't bring a gift. That's fine. I donated for you. It's like, no, you donated for you and told me about it. I don't know what this is. That is a very fair way of putting it. You donated for you and told me about it. Great. Don't need that. I think that's the free space. I think a real burden you're putting on someone is a permanent form of entertainment. So like, if you give me a DVD, a book, even like a board game, I better fucking love that thing. Otherwise, you have really, it's hard to throw those things out. Oh, no, wait a minute. This one I really don't agree with. What's wrong with, oh, I got this DVD two years ago for Christmas and I've watched it and I'm done with it and it's going to Goodwill now. I'm confused. That's not what a gift is. No, I'm saying like you're like, Ryan, I think you'll love this. I took a swing, but I think you'll love it. And it's a DVD. I don't like you show up three years later and you're just like, oh, hey, man, let's pop in that DVD. Let's see if it's any good. I'll be like, oh, I threw it out because I hate you. I think that's a real statement you kind of have to make to someone if you've gotten rid of that permanent entertainment form. This is interesting because I hear what you're saying about like a gift is supposed to be uber personal and meaningful and something that you cherish. But like my family, Christmas is a whirlwind of gifts generally. And especially growing up, like we would get lots of gifts. It was not all, you know, this one special really meaning. A lot of times it was like, oh, you're into this show right now. I got you the DVD box set or you want to read this book. So I got you this book. Like it's much more casual. It's not not every gift has to be that. It better be something that's extremely clear. Like if I say every day, like, I really want to read The Hobbit and you give me The Hobbit. Like, sure, that's fine. If you're like, I took a swing based on what I think you would like. I think that's the worst thing you could do. Oh, but I like that's what I thought you're going with with the other person likes. But if I got you The Hobbit because I know you like The Hobbit, are you saying you you have to hold on? Like you can never be like, I'm getting rid of this Hobbit book because somebody gave it to you? I think it's five years minimum, ten years probably realistically if we're talking about. I think so. If I gave you that. How many gifts do you get in a year? Like do you get like one gift on Christmas? I'm at a good place right now. I get almost no gifts. It's great. Okay. I'm good with that. I like it. If that's where you're at, I can understand somebody taking the time to get you a gift feels like it is impactful. Like my family still, like we're doing our gift exchange right now. And we are like, it's a list of that. I'm going to get a bunch of stuff. And most of that stuff is not going to be that special. Clearly the game isn't if someone gave you a list and you've got something on the list. That's obviously not a problem. This is you've made a choice. You've decided like, oh, I think Curt likes X-Files. I'm going to give him the community box set. Like I'm just stuck. I better fucking love it or I'm stuck with it. I think at least. Okay. But that's a great example. Your wife does love X-Files and I got her, I think X-Files trading cards once because it was super cheap and just kind of a fun little, you know, we weren't spending a lot of money on a birthday gift. It was just like a nice little, like I thought of you thing. I have absolutely no qualms if she like tossed those in the garbage two days later. Like I wouldn't even be surprised if she did. I said entertainment. I don't know why you're trading cards. Obviously those can be thrown out. No one knows what you're talking about. Why don't we move on? I feel like we're really getting stuck on this one. Brad? What'd you bring? So mine was weirdly similar to Ryan's and I'm glad you didn't do it. Wait, I'm sorry, Brad. I don't mean to interrupt you. Did we ever actually, you made a whole spiel about it has to be, but what did you get her? I got her 13 seasons of X-Files. Okay. So the direction I was worried Ryan was going was, which was my idea is you get someone a pet without being asked. Oh, that is worse. Yeah. I think that's a terrible gift. That's like you violated the Geneva Convention. I don't know. Yeah. Like Brad's so right because yeah, a burden is I've got this life I have to care for now as opposed to somebody gave me a book once and now I feel like I have to keep it. Like it's a book. If a loved one gives you that, they're not, you can cross them off the loved one list. I thought that's what I was going to say. Then he said board games. Oh, you're right. You've crushed it. I'm out. Well, wait, wait. Let's see what Curtis has to say. We had talked about maybe discussing fad toys like that robot dog, which is cute for like two minutes. And then it's just like, okay, I've seen it. It's done. And kind of in line with what you're saying, Brad, of like something that's kind of a burden, but also just a shitty fad toy, Tamagotchi. I think I've got her Tamagotchi. That was on my list for fad toy. Oh, you know what? Another really bad gift for me. I'm on a roll. Is you give someone a gym membership without it being asked. That's like just straight up rude. The first time Brad's ever been on a roll. It's what's the worst gift you could give. He's just gone through his Rolodex of what he's given. Oh, I gave somebody herpes one. That was a good gift. Oh, that's another good one. So gym membership is bad. To someone who didn't ask. Yeah. It's a contextual thing, right? Yeah. Where if like, if you gave it to someone and you're implying like you're out of shape, here's a gym membership, bad. It's awkward to give it to someone that didn't ask for it. I mean, like if it's someone who goes to a gym already, it's actually a super nice gift. They don't have to pay for the year. I think it's a situational thing. Well, this is situational. It's Daphne. So Brad, what is your actual gift going to be? Oh, definitely the animal. What animal? Name the animal. We'll go with the dog. No, we're going to give her a bird that has never get referenced again. Sure. We can go with the bird that never gets referenced again. So what is the worst gift? I think. Yeah. Brad's nailed it. It's. Brad's nailed it. We don't have to discuss anything. Nope. That's the answer. Well, to our audience, obviously the Christmas season has passed us, but get geared up now. Now you know what a great gift is. It's a beer of the month club. And you know what to avoid. Any animals. Don't get animals. Stop buying animals for people that didn't ask for it. So Ryan, why don't you tell us what we can expect next week when we cover the previous episode at season nine, episode 22, Frasier has Spokane. I actually thought this one was really tough. I said Frasier does a live show in Spokane. It will be the last attempt to grow the business. I think we're in the engagement zone now. I think we're either the next three episodes, we're going to see the engagement of Niles and Daphne, or it will be like the season cliffhanger from season eight. I think they tell us late in like season 11 that he lost Spokane. This is not the first time we've heard of that city. Yeah, that's right. They may call it out explicitly. So I assume it's what happens on this episode. And they don't make it sound like it's catastrophic. Like if you would only expanded to another city in Washington and now you've lost that, like you are dead in the water. All right. Well, that will do it for us. Thanks to Gavin McLeod for our theme music and thank you for listening. I suppose you don't really care if this podcast is successful. You would never take five minutes out of your precious day to go to Apple Podcasts and leave us a review. You don't use Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram, or TikTok. You aren't curious. What happens if you search for Reverse Psych Pod? Lord knows you can't be bothered to shoot us an email at reversepsychpod at gmail.com. For myself, for Ryan, and for Brad, good morning, Manchester. I hate you. Remember when he used to pretend he would get pain in his knee and then he would grab the wrong one? First off, it was called the worst pain ever. That was the name of the bit. And second off, I've won lots of awards for that bit. None of this is gonna make it in so we can move on

Recurring bit
The hosts flag Gertrude’s visit to the powder room. After a request to use the right cadence, Ryan performs “There’s a powder room alert.” A recorded clip from Frasier follows: “Let me just pop into the powder room real fast.”
Conversation excerpt
The wrap-up names beer of the month as a great gift and warns against buying animals for people who did not ask for them. Ryan wins the best-gift round; Brad wins the worst-gift round. Ryan’s separate statement that Brad also wins in the first round remains part of that exchange.
Good morning, Manchester.

Looking ahead
Ryan predicts a live show in Spokane as a last attempt to expand the business, and expects Niles and Daphne’s engagement soon or at the previous season’s cliffhanger. Ryan also recalls Frasier losing Spokane and guesses it happens next, questioning why losing that expansion would not be treated as catastrophic. No prediction is verified here.
