Welcome to Reverse Psychology, the Freacher Rewatch podcast where we go backwards through every episode of the show. Tonight we are covering Season 8, Episode 15, Hooping Cranes, which originally aired on February 27th, 2001. Did they try very hard to make it seem like they were at a live basketball game? We'll find out. I'm your host, Curtis Scheck. Joining me as always, it's our resident upside downer. It's Ryan Samsel. Hoop. There it is. Hey, Curt. Hiya. I was trying to say hoop as my greeting instead of hi or hello. It's like hoop. Oh, unrelated to the episode. Unrelated. It's just something I happened to be doing this week. And then I watched the episode. It really worked out. Fair enough. Well, also with us is a man who exclusively shoots granny shots. It's Bradley Kirkston. How's everyone doing today, guys? We're talking about basketball. We're talking about the Seattle Supersonics. Just like Gary Payton, they call me the glove because I hold everything in my hand. The Seattle Supersonics. Oh, nice, Curtis Scheck. Close. Close. I'm curious knowing what your granny shot is. That was a surprise. I don't know. How do you think I'd throw a basketball? I assume you throw it exactly like Niles at the end of this episode. That awkward sort of shot putty kind of move. I'm shocked you know what a granny shot is. I might be the worst athlete out of the three of us, which is really embarrassing. Oh, you're by far the worst athlete. Yeah. What do you mean? And it is really embarrassing. Yeah. You're not anywhere near as good as me or Curt at any sport. That's not true. It's true. The sports that I know I'm better at you then. Track and field. I'm faster than any of you guys. A, not a sport. B, I'd probably not even true. Curling? Definitely better than both of you guys. Zero chance. Oh, competitive. No, you're better than me at competitive eating. Not a sport, but yeah, definitely better than you at it. Gambling is a sport. I'm better at gambling than you. Definitely not a sport. Yes, it is. I wouldn't even show up on ESPN. We live in a world now where all sports is gambled off. You're telling me that the gamblers are athletes just like the people they're betting on? Absolutely. You didn't put 10 down on Brad to see if he hits his bet? Do you remember a couple episodes ago, we were talking about mall walkers? Athletes. I'll give you that one. Much closer than gamblers. You're thinking like poker, right? Because that was on ESPN forever. Any type of gambling. Poker. Obviously not any type. Obviously the people doing slot machines are not athletes. Yes, they are. It's not easy to pull that. It's very easy to pull that. Four corners, better than you at. Dodgeball, better than you at. No chance. You can't catch or throw or dodge. Tetherball, better than you at. You're the kind of guy that would get wrapped up in the tetherball. As illuminating as it is to list every single quasi-sport. Brad, I believe you had a story you wanted to tell. Chris, please do anything but this. Oh, okay. So here's my story. Transitions, better than you at. Shockingly, as we've said, I supervise a team and I hire people and, you know, I'm a real person. You listed those in order of believability. I, you know, had a staff member and it just was not working. Which also defies logic that you even have a staff member. But you have a lot. Last Wednesday was the last time I was going to see them in the office before we would let them go. And

Someone brought rules.

The games, the premises, and what everyone brought to the table.

Are We Dead Yet? ↗

Brad hosts an extinct-things quiz for Curtis and Ryan, tying awkwardly pronounced French questions to the episode’s translation scene. The categories are sports, food, clothing, animals and cults. Initially an English answer earns one point, a French answer two, and an answer after switching from French to English half a point. The contestants choose French throughout the first round. These are the stated rules; uncertain local awards and unusual acceptances are preserved below.

Round 1: five turns each

Curtis and Ryan alternate ten turns, with steals and English rereadings. A mistakenly read animal question during Ryan’s clothing turn is replaced, then reused in Curtis’s next turn. Brad announces the round-end score as Curtis 8½, Ryan 2. The exact local award for the Juicy answer is not stated and cannot safely be reconstructed from that aggregate.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Curtis: sports — Hartford Whalers

The recording confirms a French question relating to the Hartford Whalers, with no English clarification. Its exact wording remains unrecovered. Curtis first says New England Whalers, revises to Hartford Whalers and receives two points. He credits Judge John Hodgman for the association.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: cults — an accepted substitution

The owner cannot recover the exact French question and confirms there is no English clarification; no translation is invented. Ryan answers “the Jonestown guys.” Brad substitutes Heaven’s Gate and accepts it, bringing the stated score level at two each. Acceptance is recorded without treating the two named groups as the same factual answer.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Curtis: food — no accepted answer

Curtis tries Coke with lime, then Squirt after the English rereading. Ryan guesses Original Coke. Ryan also gives the final guess, “Mellow yellow,” preserving owner wording. His attribution is confirmed by the owner’s explicit correction. Brad reveals Surge. The score remains 2–2.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: clothing — Marbury’s shoe line

After accidentally reading an animal question, Brad asks about the shoe line created by Stefan Marbury. Ryan identifies it only as Marbury’s shoe. Curtis’s “Surge shoes” steal is rejected. Brad reveals a brand transcribed “Starberry.” Neither player receives an announced point.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Curtis: animals — the half-point correction

Curtis requests the previously misread animal question and guesses pterodactyl. Ryan’s velociraptor steal is rejected. After the English prehistoric-shark question, Curtis answers what is transcribed “Megadon” and is accepted. Brad initially awards one point; Curtis challenges this, and it is corrected to half a point, making 2½–2.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: sports — where the Expos play

Ryan guesses Montreal Expos, then Winnipeg after the English question. Curtis offers Olympics, then Ottawa. Brad reveals the Washington Nationals. Both turns are rejected. This preserves the quiz’s recorded question and answer without checking present-day sports facts.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Curtis: cults — two countries

The question asks for the Order of the Solar Temple’s two main countries. Curtis jokes “Charles Manson and friends,” then gives Cambodia and Laos after the English wording. Ryan’s Israel-and-the-US answer is also rejected. Brad supplies France and Switzerland.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: animals — Curtis steals

The actual question is absent from the transcript. The owner cannot recover Brad’s French wording and confirms no English clarification; Ryan recalls hearing elephant and 10,000. His mastodon answer is rejected. Curtis offers woolly mammoth and is accepted. The group consults online summaries and one person admits searching the wrong comparison. The announced score becomes 4½–2.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Curtis: clothing — Juicy accepted

The recording identifies Curtis’s early answer as “Zap Brannigan,” the Futurama character, and Ryan’s steal as “Uggs,” preserving the owner’s wording. After Brad restates the question as an early-2000s velour tracksuit brand, Curtis answers “Juicy” and is accepted. The owner confirms no local point amount is explicitly stated; the stated half-point rule and later total do not settle that award.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: food — Curtis steals the McDLT

Ryan guesses the George burger for a McDonald’s product promoted by Jason Alexander. Curtis steals with McDLT and is accepted. They discuss its separate hot and cool compartments. Brad then announces Curtis 8½, Ryan 2; the local McDLT award is not separately stated.

Round 2: two timed English sets

Each player chooses two categories for the other. Each correct answer earns four points, with 30 seconds per set and two questions per category. The round is jokingly called the “tits round”; its expanded name varies in the transcript. Separate timed sets are displayed within the announced second round, without inventing a third competitive round.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: sports and cults — 12 points added

Curtis initially names cults and clothing, then changes the assignment to sports and cults. Ryan answers Baltimore for the Indianapolis Colts’ former city and Vancouver for the Memphis Grizzlies’ former city; each receives four points. His David Koresh answer begins “the DKNY group”; the recording identifies his continuation as “The starchilds” and confirms Brad…

Curtis initially names cults and clothing, then changes the assignment to sports and cults. Ryan answers Baltimore for the Indianapolis Colts’ former city and Vancouver for the Memphis Grizzlies’ former city; each receives four points. His David Koresh answer begins “the DKNY group”; the recording identifies his continuation as “The starchilds” and confirms Brad supplies no correct-answer correction, saying “yep” and that six seconds remain. The source also records “That does not count”; no new local award is inferred. “Drink the Kool-Aid” is accepted for the final phrase question. Ryan earns 12 points for a total of 14; Brad briefly says 12 as the total, then corrects it to 14.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Curtis: clothing and animals — declared winner

Ryan assigns clothing and animals. Curtis gives the jeans-brand answer transcribed “Junko,” which is accepted for four points. “Foxtrot uniform Charlie Kilo” for FCUK is rejected. The recording identifies Curtis’s final answer as “Sabertooth tiger” and notes that Brad repeatedly struggled to pronounce “canine.” Brad accepts it and declares the time finished. Someone disputes whether it was in time, and Brad says there was still time. The announced final score is Curtis 16½ to Ryan 14.

And I give all of my staff end of the summer gifts at the end of the summer. She gave me her end of the summer gift the day before I was going to let her go. She gave you a gift? Yeah. Why'd she give you a gift? Wait, the gift was so thoughtful. It was all Frasier themed. Oh no. Oh my God. It was a mug with the Frasier outline and it was socks that say, and I'm going to take a picture and send it to you guys later or tomorrow. It's a socks that say, I'd rather be watching Frasier with Frasier's dad's sofa seat on the socks. That's an insane stock design, but very thoughtful. Did you decide like maybe I shouldn't fire her? No, I, there was so many reasons to fire her. Have any of you ever got like really awkward gifts that you didn't know what to do when they were given to you? I had a pretty tough white elephant pool at work one day. Oh, that doesn't sound fun. Yeah. People were getting like all these cool prizes and stuff. There was like, oh no, hockey games. There was like cutting boards and stuff. There's all these things that were useful and cool. And then I went up, I was like, ah, I don't really know any of these people, but I'm here doing my white elephant. Before you say what you get, can you tell us what you gave for the white elephant? No, but only because of memory. Got it. Okay. Whatever it was was fine. I think. Would you say whatever you're about to tell us is less than what you gave? Yes. It was less than what everyone else gave. Got it. Okay. What I pulled was a, uh, a nutcracker with a very fly, uh, like sequiny green jumpsuit. I think the jumpsuit was, was custom made for that nutcracker. I think by the person in the white elephant. I don't know. He served me well throughout the rest of the year. He sat there with a pee in his mouth for 365 days. You never actually use a nutcracker. Do people really use nutcrackers? This isn't like the 1800s. Look at this fancy pants. He buys his nuts shelled. It's like sometimes you go to a grocery store, it's hard to find a nut in the shell. Is a nutcracker still at your office? Did you ever bring it home? I don't know what happened to it. I definitely tried to pawn it off on the next white elephant, but I think I had to miss that next year. You know, I think the ether kind of just took it. I had a awkward situation recently where we had hosted a party and people had brought wine that they didn't drink. Why did you just add that they didn't drink? Obviously they didn't drink it before they brought it. What are you talking about? No, no. I'm saying like some people will bring a bottle and open it and drink it as part of a party. Like they will drink it at the party, but that did not happen. It was more like a gift bottle of wine. Right. That's pretty normal for our age. Yep. You could have just said they got you a gift. I think of your previously drunk wine. Yep. They brought a bottle of wine to the party. I'm not really a wine drinker. My husband's not really a wine drinker. And a couple weeks later we went to their house and we had a party there and we had all these bottles of wine laying around that we never drank. And I was like, I'm going to, we have to bring something. I'm going to bring one of these bottles of wine. Oh no, Curt. No, you can't do this. The minute I brought the bottle in, I got just the very hint of a look. I was like, Oh no, is this the exact bottle that they gave us? Oh God, Curtis. Did you play it off? Just an awkward, crazy person. There wasn't really anything to play off. I just sort of set it down. I don't even know if it was a genuine look about, is that my bottle of wine that I gave you? It may have been just a regular look, but I immediately had this thought of like, Oh no. All you do is as you're putting down, you go, someone brought this to the last party. Me and my husband loved it so much. Like, Oh, I just had to get another one and bring it for this one. And then they'd be like, Oh, we brought that wine. Oh my God. We're best friends now. We're wine buds. Honestly, at that point, I think it would have been too, that would have been like too obvious. I think it was actually better to just set it down and say nothing. That's not what would have happened. If Curtis did that, the woman would have been like, Oh yeah, but I didn't bring that wine. He probably got the whole person confused. You just say, you don't know who brought which is like so many people brought so much wine. I don't remember, but man, we had this one. It was so good. It was like, it's all I buy now. I'm saying knowing Curtis's luck, it was none of the people at this party. Yeah. He just totally got everything wrong. Totally different person. Well, you know who has never missed out on a party wine? Frazier. Oh, I thought it was John Stamos. Should we talk about this episode? Yeah, I guess so. We open with an elevator going up the Space Needle. Frazier gets tickets to a Sonics game. He offers them to Marty who thinks it is an invite to see the game with his sons. The brothers crane miss out on the spring sing. Oh, you know what I should have said, Chris? I should have said, throw in a couple strippers and your party still sounds boring. Yeah. What a great way to start the episode. Roz once again, playing the part of the delivery woman. It's so crazy to me. Is it? It's all we know, brother. I mean, I guess that's what producers of radio shows do is deliver packages of tickets. They produce things. They produce the tickets. You're right. They produce the plot. Part of this is that these tickets are for tonight, which is already crazy to like send tickets that short of notice. I couldn't sit around for weeks and no one checks the mail. Well, possibly. Well, I thought they said it was delivered today that day. Yeah, they said it was delivered after he left, which is why she was bringing it to him now. The only reason to bring it is that, you know, there's a time limit on it, which she didn't know. It's not like she had anything else to do. It's not like she has a daughter to take care of or anything. So she has plenty of time. Has the daughter been in this season yet? Not this season. I don't think maybe she doesn't exist anymore. I mean, that's that might eventually happen, right? She's not that old. She shouldn't be around for season one. Just mathematically. If there is no pregnancy episode or I guess like delivery episode, if it's just like all of a sudden there's a child in the mix, that would be very confusing. And he got introduced in season nine. So Marty has this moment where he's all excited for the game. And the suggestion is, why don't you bring your your foam hand? And he says that it smells funky because he got nachos on it last time. And my question is, that's a valid reason not to bring it tonight. Why do you still have it? Why is it not in the garbage? I get the vibe that Marty doesn't throw away anything. Remind me what hand this was. Was it a foam finger? Yeah, it's like the foam finger. Yeah. Isn't it just like a run under the water situation? Doesn't it kind of resolve? He probably never did that. I think he still could though. Yeah, possibly. He's not going to. It's not like Daphne's there to help him. Oh, that's why. That explains it. Okay. If Daph was here, the day would be safe. He's just waiting for Daph to get back. They do make a comment in the scene that Daphne is still away, which we assumed, but yes. We didn't talk about it, but there is a deleted scene from the episode where she returns where Marty hugs her to greet her on her arrival and then whispers in her ear, I need you to clean that foam finger. Oh yeah, as always, they deftly handle this fat plot line. Yes. They're so respectful about it. Frasier goes, she's getting her master's degree at the fat academy. Oh my God. It's such a mean comment. It's so mean. He even says it like just as a throwaway. It's like, you guys are just cruel to this girl. Like, sorry, she's going through something. God forbid one of you goes through anything. Every one of these episodes, they've thrown in a random line that sort of pokes fun at her for being fat. And it seems to be done to remind the audience, don't be concerned. There's no Daphne. The reason she's not here is because she's at a fat camp, but I don't feel like they put enough like expository explanation for it to connect unless you've seen the other episodes. I don't feel like you need the reminder. This, this show is not shy about underwriting their female characters. Nobody was going to notice that she was away for a while. Yeah, there's definitely been an episode or two. She just wasn't in, in some of the later seasons. And so it was fine. We didn't have to call her fat from afar. Brad, how about the fact that Hoop and Crane's actually about basketball? What, what was the chances of that? Seeing how I've seen the episodes. When you watched it for the right way around, did you see the titles beforehand? No, because mostly I was 11, but no, even when I watched it a couple years ago. Brad, you're telling me you didn't look the episodes up in the TV guide before you watched them? You didn't plan your week according to what the TV guy said? But even when I watched it a couple years ago, I binged them. So actually, I really do believe that this show does a good job of like honoring Seattle. It wasn't shocking to me that, that a show that took place there would do something with the supersonics because they were such a big part of Seattle. Isn't this like the last year of the supersonics though? No, they left in 2008, but you're close. Oh my God, really? This is when they were really good though. This is when they had Gary Payton and they made it to a Western Conference finals. I was, they really went to a, to go see a good team with some good seats then. This would have been some of the more expensive seats. Absolutely. At this time. Oh, that's interesting. This is 2000, right? 2001. 2001. What are we about halfway through the season? So you're saying like December, January. So this is like the heart of basketball season. This was, this aired on February 27th. Oh, that's after the all-star game, Ryan. That means that it's like, yeah, it's like prime basketball actually. But yeah, no, those were not cheap seats. Niles uses the doorbell again. What, why is everyone using the doorbell suddenly? I wondered about this because I feel like there are lots of instances on this show where somebody rings the doorbell or knocks and like they go and answer the door. But I was trying to think like when it's just Niles coming over, like, does he always ring the doorbell or does he never? I, I couldn't remember. He never rings the doorbell. It's funny. You guys say that. I played it off as he was doing it like because Daphne is not there. I don't get it. Because Daphne lives there, right? So like when the two of them come over together, I do think they just walk in. If it's just Niles by himself, I'm not sure that he does. I thought it was just another way to remind us that Daphne's not there. Didn't get bad at all. I'm sorry. You're just not on my level of thinking. I thank God. Frasier, I really, don't you think Frasier could have like done a quick aside to Niles be like, oh, hey, by the way, bud, we're not going to do the thing we're planning to do. We're going to basketball. Oh, I thought, I think he thought it was funny that Niles didn't really know. I think he wanted to see how long it would go. Like, when do you think he learned? I think when they pulled up, he knows Niles is squirrely and he can't force Niles to actually go along with it unless he just drives him there. Yeah, there's no way Niles knows what the basketball arena looks like from the outside. So it probably wasn't until they got down to their seats that he was like, oh, this is something different. That was a really old arena. They were playing in key arena. It was really old. So there's no way he likes it. We get a title card, Hooping Cranes. At the game, Frasier and Niles avoid watching by annoying Marty. They switch seats multiple times until Niles has the winning seat. He gets a chance to shoot a basket for a prize. They like to go really childish and immature whenever the Crane boys are with Marty. And it's really annoying sometimes. Like, there's no way two grown adults are playing I Spy in a basketball arena. I like that. I think it was actually very believable. What are you talking about? Curtis was into it. I've known you for a long time. You've never been like, oh, hey, you're trying to hit up some I Spy? The Brothers Crane have absolutely nothing for them at this state. They don't like the food there. They don't like the noise. They don't like the crowd. They don't like the game. There's nothing there for them. They're completely bored. And the only time they experience something like a sporting event is with their father. And so they revert to children. They revert to like they even describe in this scene, like where this comes from, like when they were growing up, they would play I Spy in car rides. First of all, that's a normal place to play I Spy. Even kids like that when they go to something that they're bored, they don't play I Spy. It is exclusively a car ride game. We'll say it would have been funnier moral brand if the two of them just like pulled out the same book in the middle of the game and were like reading a book. These were psychiatrists. This is a great place to people watch like that fucking way that they're playing I Spy. I know they're doing like a throwback to the time when they were kids, but it's stupid. We do kind of at the beginning of the scene. It's just Niles and Frazier because Marty is we find out selling the fourth ticket that they couldn't use. I thought this was quite an insight. Like I would think of today, like the concessions at a sporting event like this would just be astronomical. The idea that the cost of a single ticket would get you like three drinks and one chili dog. Very believable. I'm shocked that back then it was still that bad. He sold the ticket for some beers and a hot dog. Sold the other ticket. Good. What'd you get for it? These three frosty fellas and a chili dog that didn't make it. Yeah, I think he sold it and bought the items. They could still be on the haggle system over there. I don't know. I was a big fan of this this lady fan. She was great. I could have used way more of her. Come on, Baker! Move that side of beef down and I'm playing some decent! Yeah, she definitely gave a Steelers vibe. Yeah. I think that's fair. I'd love to go to a game with her. You knew the boys were going to hate her as soon as she sat down. I thought they were going to kind of do more of it though. There was a lot of things in this episode that I thought they would go back to and that's one of them. They sometimes have these really funny like side characters and they just don't take advantage of them enough in the show. Yeah, she was a dynamo in like the five minutes we got out of her but she easily could have shown up for more scenes or even more time in this scene. We really once we scoot away from her. It could have been something as simple as in the when the next scene when they're leaving the coffee shop she just like walks in and she goes hey like that's really all they needed to do. She could have tackled him when he's when he made the basket like some of you guys are cool. I will counterpoint a little. I agree. She's fantastic and a lot of fun. Sometimes characters like that are best in limited minutes though. You don't want to overdo it. You just mean because the phrase you read just can't write women. Well they kind of wrote her the way they would have written a man like it's not really a gendered character other than it's clearly played by a woman. I hear what you're saying Curtis. I really do but I do think that if these writers were good they could find like some small ways to to end these bits at least. I don't know if they ever go back in time in the toss salad like if they ever revert back to a previous scene rather than something that would happen later. Because this would be where I think it could come in handy like you could have a silent scene where it's like Niles or Marty or somebody reacting to her being crazy. So they're both jockeying to get the outside seat. They make old man Marty with a busted hip move inside which is crazy. Such good sons. Such good sons. Niles is an excuse of saying his leg is numb or whatever just a crazy crazy route to go. Seeing how he was just walking less than 10 minutes ago. And then as soon as he passes them even crazier Frasier's like Niles I think I deserve the outside seat. I've got smaller legs than you which is just objectively lower close to true. No he says it the other way. He says I have longer legs. Yeah he says longer. So I'm more crowded in here. I need the extra leg room. Okay that makes more sense. Right I really wanted to believe I mean even though I knew you were wrong I just wanted to go along with it and see if Curtis wouldn't say anything. I was blown away by that statement. I was like what do you mean? Okay it makes way more sense if he said longer. Yeah he did. Still hilarious. He's like dad I need I need to swap with you. And my leg is numb. And then Frasier's like well my legs are longer so piss off. I think my favorite part is not that it worked is that it works so quickly. Like you would think this bit could go on for like five or ten minutes before one of them says yes. But instead it happens in 10 seconds. Well I mean he does have to coerce him with some chapstick. That's true. Okay the mouth move that Niles is doing to self-chap his lips. There's no way that's a real thing right? Okay I had a theory about this because I've never seen that. I don't think it's a real thing. No one's ever done that in history. Curtis you're the only one on the show that has brothers. Tell us about that. This is my best guess as to what he was trying to do. He sort of purses his lips inward and I think he's trying to get all the moisture from his breath onto the lips themselves. I think that's what he's going for. There's no way that that works at all. No. Well okay and I do want to ask because you would have more experience than me in arenas like this. The claim that the air is dry and causing him to have a chapped lip. Is that even true? I don't know. I'm paying attention to the game. I mean I think Curtis anytime you have that many sweaty men in like a one arena I do think you know that's going to be an effect of that. But I'm not a scientist. Sweat leads to chap lips. What the fuck are you talking about? It just gets dry in there. It's that dry man energy. I don't know. I'm not a doctor. Dry men energy? What the fuck are you talking about? We'll get a real meteorologist on the show and he'll prove I'm right. Okay. Did they do that? Did they cover that? Yeah why not? Niles is led down to the court where he takes his shot granny style and lands it from half court. Okay if I was going to draw up a scene where Niles is going to shoot a basketball I don't care how I would have got there. There's no way I would have thought let's take a big beat maybe even a whole scene to have the the lady come over and explain what he's going to do. This went very long. It was funny but I just don't know how anyone decided that this was the route to go. Oddly I think when I was looking it's the second longest scene and it's just her explaining to him what's going to happen. It goes so long. Again it is funny. Niles trying to put on the jersey like I guess the big thing that they drew up in the writer's room but like I just don't know how you get there. Such a weird route to go. The writers are like we came in a little under on this one we're just gonna need you to really stretch on the putting the shirt off. Right we literally know nothing about basketball we just we need you to make this about shirts. Did you see Frazier and uh his dad's face the whole time when Niles is like getting ready they look so nervous for him. I don't even think I saw them. It's in between the two of them they're sitting there and Marty and they they look scared. Well and Marty also says to Frazier essentially that this is every man's dream. That's true. That is true. Sure but I get that's how Marty feels for him his own self but he must know this is not what Niles wants to do. Why is the chance to win a pickup truck. Well it is a good friend. T-Kane. Jumping ahead. So we finally get down to the court and they have the the big moment where he's gonna shoot the basket. I find it fascinating like he he must be in some kind of an actual like basketball court or arena for the for shooting this but they obviously didn't like do it during a game. So there's no real crowd there. So they just turn off every light and put one big spotlight on him and it could not be more obvious to me that they pumped in some crowd noises but that he is alone in this basketball court. That is so funny. None of that occurred to me. They're cheery too perfectly for it to be real. It didn't occur to me that that you don't turn the lights down when you do one of those shots like obviously you don't but like I've seen many of them. It doesn't make any sense that you would do that at like halftime turn off all the lights as people are going to the concession stands. Right. I was like yeah this is normal. This is what we all do. Have you ever been to like an NBA game where they hit a half court shot? No. That like never happens. No I went to one game and someone like went to do it and the whole crowd acted like they were that close but looking back on it I mean I think everyone just got excited. I don't think they were actually that close. I don't know if I've ever even seen one get shot honestly. It was one when I went to New Orleans Pelicans game. Okay. I don't need the receipt but thank you. I would probably act like it was close. You know at least until it was very clearly not right. You get into stuff. What did you think was going to happen when you saw Niles shooting? Do you think he was going to make it? As soon as they call his name it's like okay this is a very funny thing to do. It's a strong it doesn't matter how bad the shot is. This is the great idea. And then he misses the dribble. It's just a tough look. Well and they do this wonderful kind of almost slow-mo with him where he like dribbles it and it gets away from him and he has to sort of stumble towards it the exact way somebody like him would stumble towards the basketball. It's a great stumble. Yeah and then he goes to shoot and he starts to go into that granny motion and Curt I don't know if you know this the granny shot is a more accurate shot. I have heard this. I have listened to a podcast about this even. I don't believe Niles could throw it anywhere near that far. It's very far to do a half-court shot. Even though granny shot's more accurate there's just no chance he's getting there. I don't think he has the power. Like I don't think he has the strength to lift the ball up that high or that far. I guess it would be a very difficult thing for anyone to do. Forget Niles who clearly can't you know he gets bested by a machine later like he clearly doesn't have throw mechanics down. But you know as soon as he goes to the granny shot I thought I thought there was a chance. Frazier and Marty celebrate Niles's accomplishment. Marty gets calls from all his friends. I'll tell you what play by play Marty not not my least favorite look for him. Why? I thought he was good. I thought he was pretty good at doing like calling anything that Niles was doing. He drives to the coat rack. He breaks an arm out of the sleeve. He puts it out and it's good. Like I thought it was pretty fun. Oh I think I think you're putting down you're saying that was a good play by play. I think it may be double or triple negative so maybe you were confused. I don't not think that he couldn't have done it better. In the web that I wove. I don't know what to tell you Curt. Just keep up. I know Curtis alluded to it earlier but Niles glee of winning the pickup truck so he can take it antiquing was pretty great. We've all been in a situation where we wish we had a pickup truck for a single moment. I think most of us don't want to own a pickup truck because it's mostly not useful but the times that you want one oh man. By the way I would do great in a pickup truck and if you guys want to get me one I'm down to have a pickup truck. I could pull it off. If you never drive again I'll be fine with that. I've driven a pickup truck before. I look cool. I am cool. It just makes sense. Wasn't your dream in college to drive a pickup truck to chairless? Yes that was my dream. I've accomplished that dream. That's really weird because that is my exact nightmare. Me in a pickup truck or you in a pickup truck? Either way. Rad in a pickup truck it's sure this is my nightmare. Absolutely. But yeah I'm sure it would help antiquing. I don't know if anyone's ever used a pickup truck for that purpose but I'm sure it would help them. I don't think it's off in this scene. I think it makes sense but I am still just a little bit surprised how earnestly excited Crazier is for Niles. We're gonna see the jealousy come out later but in this moment he's just genuinely like thrilled for his brother's big moment and that kind of surprised me. I thought we would see the the jealousy come in sooner. You know why it does surprise me? I don't think he realizes how famous his brother is yet or like how his brother's gonna react to that. It's before the phone calls. It's before we see cocky Niles. So I think it's before all that. So that's why it hasn't hit Frazier fully. It's a good I was with you though. As I was watching it I was like oh Frazier's more into this than I would have guessed but it didn't it didn't last this whole scene so that I think that was on brand. Yeah. Because you don't get swept up like it's a pretty incredible thing to watch. Also the price was very weak for a half-court shot. A pickup truck is a big. Pickup truck? Yeah they sometimes give you like million dollars for one of those shots. Yeah but it's a pickup truck. Right. Do those not cost a million dollars? They definitely didn't then. A pickup truck in 2001 my guess would be 18 to 24,000. I like that that's based on nothing it's there's no way that's accurate but even if it is it's clearly not a million. I think that's probably high by the way. Uh I don't know. Of course you don't know. Pickup trucks now are a little over 40. Yeah I think they've escalated in price. They've gotten a lot bigger. That's true. So I'm just digging through the internet archive for auto trader in 2001. Okay. I know I always told you boys that sports aren't important but they are. Insane line out of Martin. It tracks though. Of course we all know I don't believe he ever said it to them but they don't matter. To the kids that have the least interest in sports. Frazier was kind of already off put before that right. I don't think that's what set him off but if it was the thing that set him off it would be justified. Like that is a crazy thing to say to the other son who's in the room. Yeah I mean it is one of those things like how seriously do you take that moment though? Like extremely that's the most serious Murray's been the whole show. I think at some point the the brother's crane stopped taking anything their father says seriously so I really don't think it affects them. I hope so. We get another title card. The French kiss off. At the cafe Niles has let it all go to his head. Annoying Frazier. Roz has Frazier translate her breakup with the French guy who is pretty chill about it. Hey what? This is a pretty sick jacket to open the scene with. He rocks the jacket. I can't deny it. It doesn't seem like something that he could rock but he does. He really does. Yeah. Curt you thinking a Letterman's jacket? In high school I absolutely did not have a Letterman's jacket. I was a nerd. What? But I did get a letter. For what? What did you do with it? I must have been for orchestra. Was that the worst joke gift you ever got? Yeah right? My schools started with an E so I got I remember getting like a furry E that was clearly meant to be sewed onto a letter jacket but I obviously didn't have one of those. A furry? Ryan did your school still have Letterman jackets? I think so. I mean I obviously didn't get one but yeah I think so. My school really did not. I did not. Oh hi Mark. Because one my school was terrible at sports so we didn't really do that. They like stopped that tradition in my area. So that's why I was asking. Your school is notoriously bad at letters. They taught you and they didn't do F's for some reason so. Anyway the way that Niles I know he's being a little bit peacocking here but he's also being fairly reasonable when he's like dad wants us to go to his bar we should go there and then Frazier's like no I want to go to the the concert with you and you promised and and the the compromise is we'll go to the bar and then after we'll go to the concert and I love the way that Frazier confronted with this solution wants to fight it but just has no out and so he just sort of huffs and says well I just don't I don't well I all right fine. Yeah I did enjoy that as well you get you get bested you know it is what it is. Crunch guy? Now Roz complimenting the jacket. Finally made varsity after 30 years huh? Yes but it's not a real varsity jacket Roz so you're under no obligation to sleep with me. One of my favorite lines we've had at least this season. That moment is you kind of see where it's going right away but it's just it's done so well you just you can't help but cheer for it. I didn't see it coming because he starts the line understated it just it delivers so viciously even though he's very calm the whole time. It's good stuff. Brad, Jean-Pierre. Jean-Pierre, Jean-Pierre? That was great. I oh my god talk about Jean-Pierre not being into Roz. Roz not being into Jean-Pierre. Before we actually get to the interaction what Roz has a crazy ask of Frazier like you speak French why don't you break up for me with this guy? I don't think it's that crazy. Yeah it didn't bother me I felt like well she she can't communicate with this guy because he's French she knows somebody who speaks French she's going to use his services. Yeah it is something Frazier would make Roz do if the thing was reversed so that's why I was like okay it's normal. That's true but it doesn't feel like a Roz ask for me. Well I think in the if it was the other way around I think what would happen is Frazier would ask Roz to deliver a letter to whoever he was breaking up with. Yes perhaps. I thought this was a good bit I mean I enjoy that Roz has no idea that the guy isn't completely broken up about it like they're just having a conversation about where should I get some some dinner tonight because they have to talk in French she's not gonna understand it but ultimately he knows this is over. I don't think it's a laugh out loud moment but I think it's a really strong concept really well executed very fun very funny the guy wasn't like bursting out loud with laughter but I thought it was great loved this. Niles is holding court with Marty's friends at McGinty's and Frazier has had enough they face off in a bar basketball mini game where both prove embarrassing. This bartender guy is someone famous right? He struck me maybe as like a character actor that I've seen before but I did not like I don't know his name. I didn't recognize him at all. I didn't even look him up. Well that's because you don't look anyone up, Brad. Let's talk about half court crane. What a great nickname. A horrible nickname. Oh I love it. Why is that a horrible I thought that was a good nickname. Why? Because he shot half court. He can shoot from half court. First of all it's very long. It's vaguely an alliteration. It's very long. Well you know I like things long. Names. All right limp dick Ryan what do you think his nickname should be? Uh that was good that's a good question. Half crane? Half crane's good. That's much better. What? It doesn't even make sense. Because he's half of a regular crane. Yeah yeah. I feel like half court crane is a little bit long but I think later it gets shortened to just half court. Half court's a great nickname. They could have called him Hooping Crane really tied the whole episode together. We didn't talk about that but it is always a weird thing to me when the name of the episode is one of the title cards. It feels lazy to me. Well that's what I mean. They should have just tripled down and his nickname could have been Hooping Crane and really just gone in for it. That would have dropped my scores considerably I think. They just called him Hooping the rest of the way. Hoop there it is. Hoop would be a good nickname. When we're at the bar and Niles is explaining to all these guys who have presumably held a basketball ever because clearly he hasn't. His basketball tips were so fun. Was there anything practical or useful or accurate in what he was saying? Obviously not. But it does beg the question the Twitter question of the week. What is a good basketball shooting tip? I have a great tip. When you are playing a game of horse. Which you've seen from afar. Instead you should play a game of pig because it's much shorter. Not if it was the two of you playing. Bradley? Always play with someone you know you can beat. Well those were two bad answers but let's see what you guys have with our Twitter question of the week. Make sure to hit us up on anywhere you can tweet us. Does Frazier know that he's gonna suck too and be just as bad and he just wants to take Niles down a peg or does he genuinely think I can beat Niles at this game? It was a good question. This should have been the Twitter question of the week. I know right? That should have been. Also Marty knows it's a terrible idea. Frazier just thinks he can win at anything. So I don't think he's even like questioning himself. It doesn't matter if Frazier does good or bad right? It's not like at the end of the round the bar people are gonna be like oh Frazier you're a god of the small basketball. It's all about embarrassing Niles yeah. It's a good question though. I genuinely don't know what his goal was. It's definitely to best Niles but is it because he did better or just because Niles would do bad is a really good question. My question for you is when you were watching the brothers play is that what Curtis and I look like when we try to do basketball together? You guys are so much worse. Sports on everything! You know how when Niles does his first throw and it hits the table next to him? I think it hits Frazier in the face and bounces off into the table next to him. Oh that's not as bad then. I thought he just missed the the whole thing. Well he did. Which would be an extremely brad maneuver. I think Curt would be a little more like when they get when he does when Niles does his like lean in move where he's got the foot high up on the machine. That's how I think Curt would do it. Curtis would dunk. He would just be stretching out that far. Yeah with his stretch arms definitely. I don't I think he would still miss but. I kind of wish we had an over correction like when Niles throws the second time I think it once again sort of is so aggressive and straight on that it just hits the backboard and bounces back which is kind of what he did the first time and what Frazier did. I kind of would have liked him seeing like okay going too hard isn't working. Even comments on like he's used to shooting from half court. I kind of wish his second throw was so anemic that it just sort of dribbled out of his hand. That's what I thought the original shot was going to be. I was when it when he first shot the half court shot. But yeah that would have been good. Frazier plays us out with the brothers crane continuing their basketball off. Now to an empty bar. They knock over Marty's beer. One of the better ones. I kind of liked it. Oh see I did not. I thought it was dumb. He was still having to pay for beers and all that kind of stuff. We didn't hit it in the previous scene when the bartender goes out that'll be $2.95. That was great. Well and just for context Marty gets all of his beers for free now and by the end of the scene his sons have embarrassed him so much that now he's back to paying full price. But $2.95 for a beer is a great price. I know it's 2001 but I miss those days. Yeah amen. Let's talk about the setup to the scrambled eggs. Why has everyone left the bar? Is it because they're so dangerous at mini basketball? Is that what's happening? Oh no I took it as they've been doing this for three hours. Like they won't stop. Why is the bar empty? Because it's been three hours and it's closing time. I do think it was like daylight out which is confusing but that's not bar time. Bars are usually not just completely empty by closing time. That's the whole point of closing time. You have to kick people out. There are bars that are full of people till close. I think there are also plenty of bars and I think this kind of neighborhood bar in Seattle is probably one of them that like has maybe a rush on busy nights or like at a certain time but like as the night waves on you know everybody goes home. This was Saturday night. I think it's more probable that the Crane brothers literally are paying to keep the bar open so they can just shoot hoops. Oh I like that. See Curt does the kind of answer you're looking for. Step up. Well I'll just say to the tossed salad I also didn't think this was very good. I feel like I'm just not a fan of continuations. I want a new fresh visual joke in a tossed salad and this is the same thing we got the literal previous scene. There's like no breathing room between them. This was slightly better right because Marty loses his beer and then has to immediately pay another $2.95. I pulled this scene up. I've got it stopped. It's like screenshot it basically. It's Niles with a shadow from the machine on his face and it's right in the center of his face. It looks like he's put on war paint for this. It's kind of crazy. Oh that would be odd. If they just got completely deranged that would have been great. Their clothes are like all tattered and stuff that's just been added for so long. They've given it everything they've got. They still haven't made a single basket. I would love that. Well Brad what do you think? You know I love a good basketball episode. I just thought I thought it was funny. You're first right. We've done plenty of basketball in our movie marathon. Yes you have. But all in all I'm a fan of this episode. I probably gave it too high of a Brad score but you know just sue me. I'm gonna go with the score of a B+. I knew before you started talking that this was a B+. Curtis what do you have to say about that? I am struggling. I feel like my list is a mess. It doesn't make sense. The middle episodes are so hard to compare. This is definitely a middling episode. I ultimately ranked it 44 out of 92. So pretty middle of the pack. I thought it was better than the 200th episode but not as good as a passing fancy where Frazier tutored Kirby but looking back on those scores I'm like I think I might flop those. I think I might prefer the 200th to a passing fancy but I ranked it lower. So I'm I'm confused by my own scoring but ultimately 44 out of 92. Ryan bring us home. I can't believe you gave it that high of a score because sports were involved. I assumed there's gonna be like last or like second to last whatever. Good for you Curt. But I am in a similar boat. I gave it a 6.1. I really enjoyed it. There was no weaknesses. There was no major like laughing my butt off but like there was there was funny things. Really loved the translation scene right like that is that was a very strong scene. I thought the bar scene should have been a little funnier though. I think we could have got up to the sevens if they would have tightened that up a little bit. Okay. I thought it was a good premise though. Niles doing sports is just a good idea. I hope we get to see more of that. By the way I did send you the screenshot. I saw it is a fantastic screenshot. It's amazing. I started laughing when you were talking. Yes. It was funnier than the episode. Yes. It's a very devious Niles. Good job Curtis on the pause. A hell of a pause Curt. Despite being uniquely unqualified to shoot a basket Niles took to the court anyway undeterred. Similarly unqualified for this role we've enlisted Bradley to craft our ending segment. Let's see if he'll match Niles's success. Brad? As we know in this episode it featured a basketball team that no longer exists. It's an extinct basketball team and as you all remember a couple weeks ago I died on the show and was resurrected like another famous Jew but I'm back. I'm sorry did you just compare yourself to Jesus? Yeah. Love that. So since I've been resurrected all these things that are being extinct have been coming back and I need your guys help to try to figure out what these extinct things are. I love a segment where Brad doesn't know how to say the word. We're gonna play a game called Are We Dead Yet? I love the name. Love the name. It's five categories. Your category choices are sports, food, clothing items, animals, and colts. And clothing items is spelled with a question mark? It is not but I'll say them again. Sports, food, clothing items, animals, animals, and colts. What's that last word you're saying? Colts. Like the type of horse? No like like a colt. Like a cool colt that you would join or Curtis would join I would say. You have more fun as a follower but you make more money as a leader. Oh colts. You don't say that word right and by just repeating that word over and over again did not help. Here's how this game works. One of the time you have the opportunity to choose a category and answer a question. Now here's how the scoring works because it's a little different. If you want me to ask you the question I will and if you get it right you'll get one point. But if you want me to read it to read the question to you in French because you know I needed to tie it to the episode a little more. I have translated every single question in French using chat GPT. So I will answer the questions in French if you want me to and you can get two points. I love that you didn't even use you didn't use Google Translate. Let's try chat GPT. Now if I ask you the question in French and you don't understand it you can have me read it to you in English but you would only get half a point if you got it right. Oh the classic half point system. Cannot wait. So who would like to go first? I'm desperate to go first. Ah you can go. Sports. Okay and would you like the question in English or in French? Okay and please you know forgive me if I'm mispronouncing any of this stuff. Dons, cool, vilay, jolette, las wallers. Perfect you do that perfect. Nothing to apologize for. Jolette sounds like a city in Illinois. Wallet. Waller. Waller. Now Curt's supposed to be answering a sports. Oh I'm gonna go with the are they called the New England whalers? You are close but unfortunately that is not the answer. Wait wait the Hartford whalers. Yep congratulations two points. Yes. What just happened? What? What? I have listened to every episode of the Judge John Hodgman podcast. That's what just happened. Clarified absolutely nothing. All right. Now Jesse I don't know if you know about New England this is a region of the United States known for two things primarily the Hartford whalers and crippling emotional reticence. So how many points does Curt have? Curtis gets two points. Ryan? I would like to do cults. I don't know any cults for the record. This is a long question so here we go. I went in French Bradley. Oh you went French? That's my figure. Okay maybe this wasn't the. We're quick what are we playing two because you have a lot of categories. It's still Brad falls asleep so like we're gonna time the rest. No no no no you're each gonna get five questions then we go into the second round that's called the initiative test structure or tits and so you're gonna play my tits but we'll do that soon okay. Brad who hates long games has created a five round a five question first round. This is great. Qual est l'endade de la secte qua quitte qu'an vasu spitel les aminatrit vers une existence supremes ment un suicide collective en 1997. Oh is this the Jonestown guys? Yeah I mean heaven's gate so I'll take it. All right. That's pretty good. I didn't know they had a name. I'm really upset about that. I thought I was doing really well and we're tied. Curtis? Food. Food okay. French all the way. Okay. I'm just gonna say this now we're doing French all the way Brad but you're doing a French every time. This is by far the weirdest idea I've ever had. Nope no it isn't. Qual soda vert citron de coca-cola est popular à la fin dos années 90s? I want to say coke with lime. Incorrect. Ah. A nice deal? Yep. Original coke. Incorrect. I will read you the question in English. Yeah yeah because I can get a half a point. Yeah you can. That's true. What bright green citrus flavored soda by coca-cola was big in the late 90s? Bright green citrus huh? Squirt? No. Zemelo yell. The correct answer is surge. Oh surge. I forgot about surge. Wasn't gonna get that. So the points are still two two. Ryan what category? Clothing items. Okay. Qual ad let le nun du requin per historic quai pravut measure plus de 15 matches et essu al ajala al hinet? Was that the prayer you guys do for Shabbat? It did seem weirdly Jewish towards that. I read you the wrong question. I read you a question about animals. All right let me read you the clothes question. Sorry. Okay. Quelle est la nuit de la marquee de baskets crépare Stefan Marbury? Oh okay obviously Stefan Marbury is a basketball player. I'm guessing that was his basketball shoe. I don't. I'm guessing it was Stefan Marbury's shoe which obviously is extinct. You were close but it's nowhere near the name of the shoe. Do shoes have names? The name of his like shoe line. Like Jordan had Air Jordan like the name of his line. I think Jordan's the only one who has a name. Like I don't know what are the other ones called them? A big baller brand. I don't think that's a shoe is it? They had a $600 pair of shoes. It's a brand. This is this is a brand uh the brand of the shoe. Oh can I steal? Yes. Surge shoes. No but oddly enough you're kind of close and Ryan when I tell you the name you're gonna be like yeah I should have got it. It's called Starberry. Never heard of them. Oh I've heard of those. Yeah Starberry. A horrible name. Stefan do better. Curtis what would you like to go with? I would like that food question you started reading. It was an animal question. Oh sorry. I do want the animal question. Okay we're gonna do five. The piece of piece. We're already halfway done. Qua alet la num de requa prehistoric que pravut measure plus de 15 metres et estu adjo hal avnet. I mean. Is that your turn? No I was just finishing the prayer. So it sounds like you're talking about a prehistoric animal that was 15 meters long. I'm gonna say uh oh maybe it was 15 wingspan. Could this be pterodactyl? Unfortunately you're incorrect. Right? I would like to steal but I don't know any extinct birds. Is it a is it the velociraptor? Nope but I will I will read it in English. What was the name of the prehistoric shark that could grow over 50 feet long and it's now extinct? You don't believe this. That doesn't help me at all. Megadon? Congratulations Curtis. You get one point. Why didn't you just say it was that Jason Statham movie? So Curtis is now up three to two. Ryan it is your choice. I don't want to cross myself points but don't I only get a half a point for that? You only get half of a point for that. So you have two and a half points to Ryan's two points. I don't know how the my own game works. Ryan it is your call. We have now done a question from every category. I would like to go back to sports. Okay. Das qu'il vil les expos de Montreal junt les achoulement. Okay I mean obviously I heard the Montreal Expos. I don't know if they're still a team. Is it just can I just say the Montreal Expos? That would be the incorrect answer. Curtis? I don't remember what year exactly but I want to say the Olympics. Incorrect. I will say the question in English. All right just do it in non-secretary. I want to say bookstore clue. What city do the Montreal Expos currently play in? I should know that. Oh boy. Thankfully I don't have to know baseball because it's a stupid sport. The Winnipeg. Incorrect. Curtis? I wasn't listening. What was the question? I don't think it matters if you were listening. What city do the Montreal Expos currently play in? Ottawa. They are now known as the Washington Nationals. So good job guys. Really? Yeah. We took a team from Canada and then said we're going to put in our capital. Yeah. The only team that voted against the move was Baltimore. Curtis it is your fourth round. What would you like? Cults. La orde de tempe soleil et bes dans qual dux pays avant les morts de mazy dans la anise 90. And I will tell you it's two answers. Oh great. You mean there's two separate answers or it's a two word answer? It's two separate answers. Why? How is that even? Okay. It's asking you for two things. Can I hear it again? La orde de tempe soleil et bes dans qu'est dux pays avant les morts de maus dans la anise 90. You'll be able to know I took three years of French. I don't I've not heard a single word that we covered in any of those three years. Which is wild because he's doing a perfect French accent. Charles Manson. And? Friends. Did you say enhance? And friends. And friends. Charles Manson and friends. That is incorrect. And the Bunky Bunch. Right. I mean we heard 90s in there right? 90s cults maybe. I don't know any. Okay. Beanie Babies and Pokemons. And some of these questions are on the really hard side. So I'll admit that. Oh smart. Oh smart. So you go that route and then put it in French. The order of the solar temple was based in which two main countries before its mass deaths in the 1990s? Barely even understood the question. Did you say that in English? Yes. And it was Curtis's turn. I know. I'm just prepared for the steal. Cambodia and Laos. Nope. 0 for 2. I may go Israel and the US. Incorrect. It was France and Switzerland. Next two guesses. Ryan. I will go with animals. Okay. I mean obviously we heard elephant. We heard 10,000. I think that was probably years. Maybe it was what predated the elephant by 10,000 years. So I'm going to say I don't think this is correct but I'll say the mastodon. Incorrect. Curtis? Is a woolly mammoth a different animal than a mastodon? Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding. I think that's a mastodon isn't it? I don't think so. I want judges. Judges rolling. I've googled it and the AI overview says no a mastodon and a woolly mammoth are not the same thing. They are different prehistoric animals that belong to the same scientific order. I also used the AI google and it goes no not at all. Curtis I think you just stole the points. I did just steal the points. Oh actually no sorry that's not what it said. It said not all mammoths were woolly. So it's four and a half to two points and it's Curtis's turn. Fuck yeah. Wait the woolly mammoth was a mastodon though. Oh I just googled the wrong thing. I said our mammoths woolly mammoths. Curtis what category would you like? I think the only one I haven't done is clothing. Yeah okay. Tell you what Brad this is a crazy game and it makes no sense but it is by far your best effort. I'm disturbed that this is not over at the end of this. There's a whole other part of this game coming. I love it. I can't wait to play the tits round. Quel marché des souvents au valor et popular et début des années 2000. It's also really hard to tell if you're getting better or worse at French as you go. I do think this whole concept of someone saying something in a different language of us guessing is something that we can recreate. I got news for you. It will be you reading bad other language every time. That's fine. So what mint won a velour suit in 2000? It's clearly what he's saying. Okay. And the answer is zap brandy gem. Pagan. I didn't realize you were such a coin a sewer. Incorrect. Orion with the steel? Odds. The question was this was an early 2000s velour tracksuit brand. Oh juicy. Yep congratulations Curtis. I thought velour was the brand. What's velour? A material. Made of woolly mammoth? Yeah. Congratulations Curtis you are dominating but once we get to the tits round anything is possible. Anything could happen in the tits round. Ryan? Is books a category? I'd like to go with books. No I don't. You've gone with have you gone with food yet? I don't think you've gone with food. That doesn't sound right. I'd usually default to food. All right let's try food. I'm hoping to hear some words I recognize like l'omlet. Qual est la name de prudent McDonald's que Jason Alexander a aid et promovar? I did recognize some of the words believe it or not. But they did not make sense. So Jason Alexander doing McDonald's stuff. Is it the George burger? Maybe? Incorrect. Curtis for the steel? Okay I remember I know this that he was in a McDonald's commercial in the 90s before Seinfeld. I want to say it was the McDLT? Curtis got it right. What the hell's a McDLT? They served you all the like the meat and bread in one container and in a separate compartment was all the vegetables. You say that just once you'd like your hamburger hot and your lettuce and tomato cool and crisp all at the same time? Yeah! Well I say you got it. I'm talking McDonald's lettuce and tomato hamburger. The McDLT. What's the DLT? Sorry I looked it up. The McDLT stands for the McDonald's lettuce and tomato. That's awesome. I love it. Okay so we are at the the tits round with the score of eight and a half to two. You will choose two of the four rounds for your competitor. And Curtis you can go first obviously because you know you have 10,000 4,000 points. Ryan will then have 30 seconds to answer as many of those questions in that category as he can in English. Every time he gets a question right he gets four points and then uh he'll choose two of the remaining categories for you. Can we up a minute because you can't read that good. No I can read really fast. Who's timing it? Are you gonna time it Brad? I am. Yes. Okay. Okay so I I get to assign Ryan categories. Yeah. Like I know what the answer is. The answer is cults and clothes. I'm concerned that I'm already winning by a large margin and by getting to pick your categories I'm I don't know how it's going to be a fair fight. I'm not worried. I don't think it's gonna matter either way. Okay because none of this does. Well no no I just don't I think if I chose the my two favorite categories I don't they're gonna be crazy questions anyway. The fact that all these were in French didn't really hold me back because I didn't know any of the things Brad was talking about. I'm gonna assign you sports because I don't want to get stuck with sports and cults. Okay are we ready? I guess. You're still sticking with 30 seconds. Ready set go. What city did the Indianapolis cults used to play in? Baltimore. Four points. What city did the Memphis Grizzlies used to play in? Vancouver. Four points. David Koresh claimed to be the final prophet of which group? The DKNY group. The ones you guys are the Starch Islands. Divinity Dens. That does not count. What infamous phrase is often mistakenly associated with the Jonestown Massacre? Drink the Kool-Aid. Yep six seconds to go and you got 12 points. Good job. Keep going. Stop telling me the score. No that's it. You finished the category. That was it. Oh yeah I said you had two questions in each category. I did not hear that part. Yeah what's the current score right now? You got 12 points. You're at 14. I'm not happy. I feel like I did I was throwing you a bone with sports and I shouldn't have. So I'm winning. I didn't know you're gonna ace the cults. You are winning. It's eight and a half to 12 points right now. I thought you just said he had 14 points. Yeah sorry 14 14 and it has four points a question. Yeah and it's however Brad does funny math between. Okay so okay so it's kind of close. Okay that's good. So I will go with clothing and animals because of the two categories I remember. Ready Curtis? Yes. One two three go. This was a baggy jeans brand made popular by rappers in the 1990s. Junko. Yep four points. What does F-C-U-K stand for? Foxtrot uniform Charlie Kilo? Nope. What extinct predator is known for its long curved saber-like uh canine canine canine canine canine canine canine canine canine canine canine yep congratulations. And your 30 seconds are up. You just you just won the game Curtis. You're the champion? I don't think you answered in time. That was that was way long. There was still time. So now now that Curtis has beat you we go into the third and final round. Oh there's more. Should we get back to the tit element here? What happened? Why was there tits involved? Just happened to be the name of the game. You know the intermental testing system. So it's the name of the round. Yeah whatever. Uh you won with a total score of 16 and a half points to 14 points. You were our winner. Close. And our defending champion and congratulations. Can he answer the last question just to see if he would have got it? What island rodent species famously went extinct after the introduction of cats? It's a brutal question. Oh the dodo? Christmas island rat. Good thing you got it. So what are we doing now? What's happening? That's round three Curt. Yeah you just won round three. Congratulations. No I thought I thought there's a real round three wasn't it? No there's not. I was just kidding. There's not a real round three. Because you said that I won the whole thing but now there's another round which is very confusing. Congratulations Curtis. Well you know what else is confusing is that we do this backwards. So Ryan why don't you tell us what to expect next week when we cover the previous episode at season eight episode 14 Hungry Heart. Marty has to get out. Wait let me read better. Marty has to get out on an old guy diet or his ticker won't tick. Does that sound make sense? You want to do a round where you actually read it better? I did read it fine. That's I think I wrote it bad. One second let me let me translate whatever the fuck I wrote. Would you like me to read it in French? Marty has to I don't know what I was trying to write. I literally wrote Marty has to get out on an old guy diet. I definitely I'm trying to say that Marty will be eating an old person diet. Maybe he's going to have lack of flavor or his heart will fail him. Thank you for explaining that twice. We appreciate it. This is an episode about translation. We all know it. This is um over. This is when you wrap up the episode Curtis. That will do it for us. Thanks to Kevin McLeod for theme music and thank you for listening. I suppose you don't really care if this podcast is successful. You would never take five minutes out of your precious day to go to Apple Podcasts and leave us a review. You don't use Facebook, YouTube or Instagram or TikTok. You aren't curious what happens if you search for Reverse Psych Pod. Lord knows you can't be bothered to shoot us an email at ReversePsychPod at gmail.com. For myself, for Ryan and for Brad, good morning Paris. I hate you. Welcome to Reverse Psychology, the Fraser Rewatch podcast. Energy cards. What is this? You're falling asleep in that room. Brad, wait in here. Was that wildly different than normal? You seem like this hyper energy today. I can't describe it. Like you started talking and I didn't even think Craig was finished saying now recording. Let's just slow it down and bring the energy. Very confused. That is confusing. Act like you're excited to be here. Try it. Try it that way. Slow it down and bring the energy. Especially from Brad. That's such confusing notes.

                Which activities count as sports?

Brad claims superiority in a string of activities, including running, curling, gambling and playground games. The others reject several as sports and challenge the rest. Mall walking becomes a callback to the earlier club episode. These are boasts and jokes, not measured athletic results.

Awkward gifts and a possibly regifted bottle

Brad recalls receiving thoughtful Frasier-themed gifts from an employee just before her employment was due to end. Ryan describes a white-elephant nutcracker in a sequined green jumpsuit. Curtis worries he returned a bottle of wine to the people who originally gave it to him, but acknowledges that he may have misread their look. The proposed cover story is advice from the conversation, not something he says he actually did.

Daphne’s absence and Roz’s delivery duty

The hosts criticize the repeated jokes about Daphne’s weight and question why Roz mainly appears to deliver the tickets. A supposed deleted foam-finger scene is a joke in the discussion, not an independently verified deleted scene.

                Niles makes the shot

The group debates I Spy at the arena, the lively woman in the neighboring seat, and the drawn-out jersey instructions. They discuss how staged the darkened court appears and whether Niles could throw a granny shot that far. Marty’s play-by-play and Niles wanting the truck for antiquing are highlights; Brad also recalls wanting to drive a pickup shirtless. Production and sports explanations remain the hosts’ interpretations.

The French breakup and a devious Niles

The hosts praise Frasier translating Roz’s breakup and Niles’s varsity-jacket retort. They debate Frasier’s motive for challenging Niles at the bar, then disagree about the silent basketball coda. Curtis’s paused screenshot makes Niles look especially devious and earns praise.

                A good basketball shooting tip?

Curtis recommends PIG instead of HORSE because it is shorter. Brad says to play someone you know you can beat. The facilitator dismisses both as bad answers and invites listener replies. This opinion exchange is separate from the scored quiz.

                A middle-of-the-pack basketball episode

Brad gives B+. Curtis keeps #44 of 92, despite wondering whether his comparator placements for The Two Hundredth and A Passing Fancy should be swapped. Ryan gives 6.1, praising the translation scene and wishing the bar scene had more payoff. The /10 display is the established convention, not a denominator spoken here.

The third round is a joke

Curtis is declared the winner, 16½–14. Brad announces a third round, then explicitly says there is no real third round and he was joking. One leftover rodent-extinction question is asked after the result. “The dodo?” is offered and Brad supplies Christmas Island rat; this does not change the competitive result. The short answer is not used to infer a physical speaker.

                Looking ahead

Ryan translates his own Hungry Hearts prediction

Ryan stumbles over his written line about Marty getting “out on an old guy diet.” He clarifies that he means Marty will have to eat an old-person diet, perhaps without flavor, or his heart will fail. The others suggest reading it in French. This remains a prediction, not verified episode plot.
