Camping Competition
Curtis hosts and also plays against Ryan and Brad. Each chooses three gear items before a fictional emergency; the other two judge survival. Ordinary survival earns one point and failure loses one. Used items are consumed and replaced before the next turn; the fewest-items bonus is three points. These are the podcast’s fictional game rulings.
RESULT STATUS
A winner is actually on the record.
Ryan is explicitly congratulated after the final tally. Curtis also competes; his three-point fewest-items bonus leaves him tied with Brad for last. This losing tie is not a tied victory.

RECORDED ANSWER / CHOICE
Three lifelines
Lucky charm conjures an item: success +1, failure −2. A claimed mystery-box item must be used: success +2, failure −1. Both are once per participant. Harrison Ford rescues by helicopter, bypassing the judges for zero points; the rule is changed to one use across the whole game. What counts as one lucky-charm item later remains disputed.
RECORDED ANSWER / CHOICE
Ryan wins; Brad and Curtis tie last
The announced pre-bonus score is Ryan 3, Brad 1, Curtis −2. Curtis receives the stated three-point bonus for using the fewest items, tying Brad at 1. Ryan is congratulated as winner. The item-use counts are not reconstructed from the transcript; the bonus is preserved as announced.

Round 1: lost or stranded
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan: dense fog
Chooses a laser flare, hunting bow and survival knife with fire striker. The flare is accepted for +1 after disagreement. He unnecessarily shoots at deer while waiting, consuming the bow as well.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad: stranded on an island
Chooses a stormproof lighter, fishing kit and repair tape. His plan to fish and live on the island forever is rejected: −1. He keeps the lighter for later.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis: campsite washed away
Chooses a snow shovel/saw, water filter and field guide. A proposed redraw is rejected. He supersedes a field-guide idea with Harrison Ford’s rescue for zero points, consuming no ordinary gear and removing that lifeline for everyone.
Round 2: wildlife
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan: snakebite
Adds a flamethrower and ice axe to his retained knife. He burns the snake, claims a mystery snow shovel/saw, then proposes amputation and cauterization. The judges reject the plan: −1, returning him to zero.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad: charging moose
Adds a collapsible sink. He throws it and claims a mystery laser flare, aiming at the moose’s mouth. After debating the device and plan, the judges allow survival: +2. The announced interim scores are Brad 1, Ryan 0, Curtis 0.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis: an approaching wolf
Keeps all three original items. He consults the guide and imagines it recommends offering filtered water. The judges reject both the plan and his appeal: −1.
Round 3: medical emergencies
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan: hypothermia
Adds a hatchet to his retained knife and ice axe. A fire-striker plan is deemed insufficient. He uses lucky charm to summon a doctor and is accepted: +1.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad: severe burns
Adds a tourniquet/trauma dressing, uses it and calls EMS with lucky charm. The group disputes whether one item permits an ambulance plus personnel. Brad says both “Well, you can’t have two people in the car” and “You can’t just have one.” Curtis says “I’ll grant him an ambulance with an EMT.” Despite that unresolved rule, they agree his plan fails: −2.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis: illness after river water
Adds oxygen and electrolyte packs to his retained snow shovel/saw. He uses lucky charm for an antibiotic and uses the hydration packs. The judges accept his fictional plan: +1.
Round 4: weather and natural hazards
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan: soaked gear below freezing
Adds a titanium multi-tool to his ice axe and hatchet. His fire-by-friction plan expands to use all three items when the ice axe is challenged. Survival is allowed: +1.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad: blizzard without shelter
Adds a folding saw. He proposes burning out the snow with the lighter, cutting wood and reinforcing a shelter with tape, using all three items. The judges accept: +1.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis: lightning starts a forest fire
Adds a Jetboil stove to his shovel and oxygen canister. He proposes a shallow trench and a fiery distraction using the canister and stove. The judges reject the plan. Jokes suggest larger penalties, but the retained deduction is −1, consistent with the announced final tally.
Round 5: rescue and exit failures
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Ryan: a tree blocks the vehicle
Chooses crampons, avalanche probe/beacon and paracord. He uses the beacon to seek help and is accepted: +1. His score reaches 3; the round continues for the others.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Brad: jammed flare gun
Chooses a multiband radio, cold-weather sleeping bag and headlamp. He uses the radio to signal and wears the headlamp for style. The judges accept: +1, bringing him to 1.
WHAT THEY BROUGHT
Curtis: car failure in a wildfire
Chooses a GPS communicator, laminated map and night-vision monocular. His mystery box gives chemical hand warmers. He withdraws communicator use, rejects a monocular suggestion and concedes failure: −1. Ryan suggests using the night-vision monocular to see the wildfire before dying.
