The Long and Whining Road

Curtis reads elaborate wine descriptions. Brad and Ryan each associate the description with their own lives, drawing on whatever is funniest. Curtis chooses which pairing he likes better. Six wine-specific rounds finish with local decisions before a new pairing opportunity opens. There is no appeals process, and no final cumulative tally is supplied.

A 2015 Burgundy pinot noir

The first description evokes strawberries, violets, forest floor, silk, truffle and the dreams of old monks. The automatic wine-name transcription is retained in the source appendix. Curtis explicitly awards Ryan one point.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Brad: a midday hike

Brad imagines a hike in the woods with flowers and pleasant scents, drawing on his summer-camp experience.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: peeing under the stars

Ryan asks about the ethereal quality, then links damp earth and a nighttime sky to taking a pee, a swig and looking at the stars.

Boone’s Farm Blue Hawaiian

The fluorescent-blue description mixes artificial pineapple, aggressive sugar and questionable life choices. Curtis selects Brad and rejects an appeal.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Brad: slot machines

Brad chooses slot-machine gambling specifically: bright, stupid and a quick way to lose money. He reaffirms it after clarification.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: fraternity beer pong

Ryan recalls the old beer-pong days, especially fraternity parties rather than Curtis’s apartment.

Château Margaux, vintage 2000

The description emphasizes aristocratic grandeur, blackcurrant, rose petals, cedar, graphite and immortality. Ryan receives the round; Brad’s late immortality joke does not establish a changed award.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Brad: watching CNN

Brad links the pretentious description to watching CNN and later jokes that Wolf Blitzer is immortal.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: a water-park lazy river

Ryan locks in a lazy river. Curtis connects its endlessness to the description’s immortality.

Carlo Rossi in a giant jug

The cheap-table-wine description evokes fermented raisins, crushed aspirations, rough sweetness and a backyard plastic cup. The source’s “Pazian” name remains unnormalized. Ryan makes the early “I pick Brad” remark; it is separate from Curtis’s final award. The later explicit comparative selection is Ryan’s walking drink.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Brad: Taco Bell alone

Brad pairs the wine with eating Taco Bell and drinking entirely alone.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: walking and day-drinking

Ryan imagines day-drinking around town, eventually discarding and accidentally breaking the empty bottle.

Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018

The Napa description emphasizes wealth, opulence, cashmere-like tannins and a finish longer than a California sunset. Curtis says, “I’m going to go with Ryan’s again,” selecting Ryan. Curtis’s later “Brad wins it” is a joke, not a revised award, as confirmed in the recording.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Brad: a solo wine festival

Brad describes feeling special while trying wines alone at a festival and later adds that he learned to make coleslaw.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: locked in a bus bathroom

Ryan recalls drinking in California at twenty-one with his parents and getting so drunk that he locked himself in a bus bathroom and forgot how to unlock it.

MD 2020 Banana Red

The Mad Dog description evokes artificial banana, cherry cough syrup and broke-college-student regrets. Curtis selects Brad, preferring goofy college drinking to its vile consequences.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Brad: freshman-year homecoming

Brad recalls fraternity homecoming drinking and Ryan ending up in the bottom bunk of Brad’s dorm room. The story adds the unpleasant condition of the roommate’s bed.

WHAT THEY BROUGHT

Ryan: a bench and a ruined couch

After adding context to Brad’s story, Ryan is explicitly asked for his own Mad Dog story. He recalls sleeping on a park bench while waiting for a bus, then another year when a friend vomited into a couch and the housemates discovered it days later.
